BA are to pull the cargo facility on their Gatwick flights after 25th October.

This effectively means no airline into Gib will carry cargo/courier after that date.

BA are said to be blaiming turn round times at Gib for this decision.

man friday 18th Oct 2008 15:43

a poor excuse, the turnround times are no worse now than they were when gb airways operated the route.

infact if anything they seem slightly better ( ctots and tech snags aside).

ExpectmorePayless 18th Oct 2008 17:08

Have you tried Monarch ? whoops sorry, monarch

They have regular departures from Luton and Manchester to the Rock. :ok:

IB4138 18th Oct 2008 17:25

Monarch's services to Gib are non-cargo carrying.

compton3bravo 18th Oct 2008 18:07

cargo

I think you will find there are!

TartinTon 18th Oct 2008 18:33

All monarch cargo is dealt with by ACM Ltd

IB4138 18th Oct 2008 18:58

Monarch's web site does not say they carry cargo on the Gib routes, confirmed by enquiries to ACM .

Added to that, the road logistics, established for many years by freight companies, take the cargo to Gatwick, not to Luton or Manchester, along with cargo for other destinations.

the turnround times are no worse
Agreed, obviously they think that the 30 minute time on Thursday's flight was too long.

(though there was a slight hic-cup with the outgoing slot time according to the pilot)

P.S. Is the light aircraft on the apron is the one mentioned previously on here

man friday 19th Oct 2008 15:05

west lakes,

the light a/c on the apron ( SR22 minus its prop!) wasn't the one mentioned in regards to the runway excursion.

this one just bent his prop with a bad nose down landing !!!!

I think I'm bringing this thread out of the woodwork. What are the loads usually like on all of the GIB flights?

nivsy 5th Jul 2009 21:48

Loads good as far as I can see - probably due to the exchange rate issue - and with Gib having the pound instead of euro so parity retained for UK customers.

I think though there is up to 10% reduction in capacity for the carriers at the moment due to construction work for the tunnel.

englishoaks 6th Jul 2009 10:16

can you shed some light on the tunnel construction, what's it for, where does it run etc.?

Steviec9 6th Jul 2009 10:53

Roadway tunnel under the runway from Spanish border into Gibraltar, obviating need to close the main access road when runway is in use, with consequent increase in capacity for the airport. To serve this increased capacity, a new terminal is also being built which (I believe) will have an ‘internal border control’ for pax to and from Spain (I believe there will be two entrances, one in Spain and one in Gibraltar). Certainly a popular airport for the Spanish to use and Andalus Airlines now provide services to Madrid and Barcelona in addition to the EasyJet, BA and Monarch services to the UK.

Passed through a few weeks ago and construction is certainly underway and planes are now parking remotely from the existing terminal with pax being bussed to/from. No idea when final completion is due; suggest the Gibraltar Government website for details (although this was well out of date when I last looked).

englishoaks 6th Jul 2009 15:44

I'm out there at the end of the month, and looks like its a 319 instead of the usual (tired cabin) 734 on BA. Wonder if the increase in capacity will mean more daily BA flights. Everytime I travel out there it's almost full

man friday 6th Jul 2009 15:53

No plans for extra BA flights, just the one a day and i believe easyjet are cutting back on flights to one a day on the winter schedule.

Ba themselves have dropped the lgw flight and are bringing in a lhr service for the winter.

sunshine79 6th Jul 2009 16:16

LHR would be much better for me, as I would have to fly to LHR from NCL. Will have to look at the timings. My friend can give me the number for hotline to get a cheapie flight there. I really need to go over very soon though.

man friday 6th Jul 2009 17:38

Sunshine 79,

its a lot easier and a hell of a lot less hassle to go AGP NCL direct with easyjet

Used to use the GIB-LHR and then connect on Midlands LHR-MME service, but with the prospect of a delayed flight out of gib due to a bus ride to agp 'cause of bad weather i find it a dam side easier to fly direct to NCL.

HZ123 6th Jul 2009 17:58

What a waste of monies, a tunnel, when the airport has what 10 flights on the best day of the week. Even with a new terminal it will never be a busy place. It is so reassuring to see that governments worldwide all share the same levels of carelessness with tax payers resources.

Might the money be better spent on a couple of hotels?

sunshine79 6th Jul 2009 19:27

man friday,

NCL is easy to fly from, but then have the hassle of getting to GIB from AGP. The outbound flights NCL-LHR-GIB slots together perfectly but the return comes in slightly too late to get the last flight to NCL. It just means I would have to stay overnight and have to stay at Jury's Inn and have a few drinks in TGM, lol.
