DONCASTER

Stephen Miller, the chief executive of low-cost long haul carrier Oasis Hong Kong Airlines, said Robin Hood Airport is among the 60 routes that his company is looking to serve by 2012. This would mean that Yorkshire could fly direct to Hong Kong from the airport within five years.

Oasis Hong Kong, which launched in October last year, offers daily flights from Hong Kong to Gatwick Airport. It will launch a six flights a week service between Hong Kong and Vancouver on June 28. Economy fares start from HK$1,000 (£64.28) one way from Hong Kong to London. So far, it has flown 95,000 passengers.

Darlington-born Mr Miller, who previously worked as chief executive of the Dragonair airline, told the Yorkshire Post newspaper: 'Robin Hood is certainly on the list [of potential destinations]. If the market is there we will certainly have a go.'

'What we find is that when we go into places like Robin Hood, the whole area is behind us. You are not fighting competitors. You have got partners.'

A spokesman for Robin Hood Airport told the newspaper: 'We will watch Oasis Airlines' expansion with interest. Obviously we would welcome the opportunity to bring the region's first direct air service between Robin Hood Airport and Hong Kong.

Is this the Ryanair equivalent of a long haul airline serving Manchester/Doncaster?;)

Seriously, if this was to become true, it would seriously mark the advancement of air travel since the early 90s. I just wonder what the other 59 routes were. Hope more UK routes included such as PIK, MAN, LPL, EMA, BFS.
