Escorting a relative through security?
 

Hi all

May seem a bit of a strange question this but here goes...

Can a pilot at BHX holding a BHX pass escort a relative (who isn't travelling on that day) through security to give them a look inside his aircraft at a gate (obviously an aircraft with a bit of downtime). Or would you have to obtain a temporary pass in order to do this? Ifso does anyone know how one should go about this and whether there will likely be any cost to doing this and also how long it takes?

As i said it may seem a strange question but any info would be much appreciated.

I would doubt it very much.

In Manchester, if I am not operating, I cannot even escort a travelling passenger airside. With the rules also on obtaining Disclosure Scotland clearance, I don't know how temporary passes are arranged anymore either.

I would have thought it would be possible to arrange something.
At my place we have visitors passes - big form to fill out, photographic ID, form countersigned by the 'sponsoring' department and Aviation Security and then visitor must stay with a full pass holder at all times.
Visitor goes through the staff search point and is subject to a full frisk regardless of what the arch says! Pass can normally be issued within about 10 mins

I'm almost positive that there is a directive from the DFT stating that only staff or persons who are carrying out business in the course of duty may pass through the Restricted Zones. (this was brought into effect when airports were put at Critical Alert last August)

I believe this is generic throughout all Uk airports.

Potenially you could be taking a bit of risk by just asking the airport authorities to grant you your request... Also, how would your Company percieve the request if it was reported??

To get anyone escorted airside you will need to get an escorted pass completed. At BAA airports this would be done on the basis of "familiarisation" or "visitor" but I would check the small print as to whether you are restricted in terms of family member.

The pass would have to be signed off by an authorised signatory. (At BAA airports.....presume similar elsewhere).

The final hurdle is whether an aircrew pass allows such escorts......certainly a full airside pass does, but there are some differences with aircrew passes in some places.

Also, as with the above post, you are not meant to be using your pass for airside access when not on company business.

I'm sure it could be arranged.....but don't be tempted to cut corners, and be up-front about your plans, or you risk it backfiring.
