Noise!!!!!

Well its Thurday night on the ramp at Liverpool and the Hungarian Antonov 12 is just departing.

Dont know about you folks who have seen in the introduction of Europe wide noise bans for loud aircraft, but that aircraft seems to just take the peverbial.

How can an airport that is supposed to be environmental friendly allow an aircraft to operate at night with an APU that sounds like 4 conways at full chat!!

I am of the view that if you buy a house near an airport you shut expect a resonable level of noise but I honestly feel sorry for the nearby residents.

I am ex RAF and have put up with Tornados and the like so am not averse to the sound of freedom! But hey....if you are going to charter in someone to cover the demise of Emerald, then at least find someone who complies with the rules and regs.

Ask anyone on the ramp at LPL what they think and you will no doubt get the same answer. Its a nightmare!

Come on Mr. CAA........do your job and sort it.

I think that under grandfather rights some turboprop aircraft manufactured before a certain date that are not chapter 3 are exempt I know the AN22 is covered by this little bit of info....

Yes but!!!!!!!

That may be the case in reply to both the above but it is 2006 and having had my ride (727) swept out of europe for not being compliant, I find it incredible that such noisy monsters are allowed to continue to operate at such sensitive times of the night.

We are talking about the APU here!!!!!! You should hear it!! I have never encountered anything like it in all my years on the ramp.

Just a blatent blind eye if you ask me to line the pockets of all concerned.

The Vanguards were also rather shrill, I bet LTNman fondly remembers the Air Bridge midnight departure from Luton with newspapers. You could hear that miles away before it had even pushed back!

How About L188

The Electra is still around and when that taxies aroud you can here for miles and if the ground power unit is up and running you can here that tens of miles away:ok:

But the Vanguard was a nicer aircraft being British shame its not around>:ok:

Yes yes yes but.........

Yes these are fine aircraft and you can add the Viscount, DC8 and many more.

But the point is this noise is so intrusive the likes I have never encountered from an APU. When it shuts down after the engine start, the noise from the Russian turboprobs is a mere whisper is comparison. I can't beleive a manufacturer can fit such a unit to an aircraft even if it was built some years ago.

Anyone know if its an aftermarket add on or have Antonov fitted some old Soyuz rocket motor from a scrap yard??? !!!

Ever worked with a Tupolev TU154? Thats a loud APU!

RVR27/09 27th Aug 2006 00:18

EMB 145's APU is louder than it engines when at idle, when it has no hush kit fitted to it.
We ask a certain well known airline to shut down the APU after 15 mins & use GPU instead, as local residents complain all the time. :hmm:
