Well i guess i wont argue with you if you say you can but my opinion and experience is that manual check in takes ages compared to that of computerised. Its the level of service the pax recieve aswell, like i said before no one wants to have to stare at the top of someons head whilst they write all the details down and get the que down. A nice friendly smile and chat will go a long way in my eyes, the pax are so tense and nervous they need to be calmed down a bit. Surely thats why a check in agent job exists.....its the first point of contact with the airline as they start their journey. Am i a check in agent??? now that would be telling!:ok:

Manual check-in takes no longer than the computer check-in system
That's a hard one to prove, but it DOES require more check-in desks and it definately results in lengthy queues! It must be really frustrating for Ryanair passengers who are in a long queue, when they can see that the agent sat on the next desk is doing sweet FA. At least with common check-in, you can spread the burdon.

daz211 21st Sep 2006 16:08

common check-in is a good idea, but not with a manual check-system.
I dont think that the lines of pax waiting to check-in would get any shorter by using a computer, the amount of pax waiting in line is due to the masive operation that ryanair have at Stansted.
I have checked in for many Ryanair flights and have not had to wait longer than anyother time with other airlines who used computers.
I stick to what I say, If a agent has only ever done manual check-in they are good at it and it just take the same amount of time as using a computer, Remember Ryanair only has 2 agent on each flight most airlines have 3 agents the check in's are open about the same time and Ryanair's aircraft seat more pax as lets say Easyjet who sometimes pull over the pax from another flight.

Common check-in is impossible with a manual system. Unless you give each agent 10 manifests, 10 sets of boarding cards, etc etc. Recipe for disaster if you ask me!

I dont think that the lines of pax waiting to check-in would get any shorter by using a computer, the amount of pax waiting in line is due to the masive operation that ryanair have at Stansted.
But surely if you have agents doing nothing, then you have a waisted resource! You could effectively move half of the passengers in the queue to someone who has checked-in their flight or nearly so and half the queue length!

Remember Ryanair only has 2 agent on each flight most airlines have 3 agents the check in's are open about the same time and Ryanair's aircraft seat more pax as lets say Easyjet who sometimes pull over the pax from another flight.
Easyjet only use the equivillant of 1 agent per flight and their queues are never as bad as Ryanair's. I take on board what you say about the reduced capacity of EZY aircraft but we are only talking 33 passengers. (737-800 189Y vs A319 156Y)

If you break down the check-in process and you follow ALL of the DFT requirements for manual check-in, then the process IS much longer.

COMPUTERISED CHECK-IN (free seating)

1) Find passenger
2) Check-in
3) Enter number of bags

MANUAL CHECK-IN (free seating)

1) Find passenger.
2) Write sequence nuber, gender, and number of bags on manifest.
3) Write seq number on bag tag.
4) Attach baggage sticker to bingo sheet.
5) write surname/initial on boarding card.

My view is that computerised check-in should be mandatory during normal operations, simply because I think it cuts down on the number of mistakes and makes AAA more reliable. Just out of interest, how do the guys at Ryanair get the info from the manifest at check-in to the gate staff in order to locate missing passenger details??

daz211 21st Sep 2006 21:08

I dont work at ryanair but think they must use bingo sheet/card,
check-in calls the gate advise security numbers used once check-in closed, missing security number from boarding cards, gate staff call check in info passed to gate agent by check in, action taken.

Can anyone tell me what plans have been put in place Re expansion at STN for the Olympic games, I was just thinking, the last time I went through STN there were only afew stands empty, And the terminal was packed to bursting, As Stansted will be the most convenient Airport for Stratford and the Olympic village, with direct rail and road links, BAA must have some plans in place for more stands and a expansion of the terminal.

Maxjet

Can anyone tell me if Maxjet have a :yuk: aircraft,

MY101 - STN-JFK today is via IAD STD 1000.
MY201 - STN-IAD today canx STD 1300.

G-APDK 25th Sep 2006 09:50

I believe the amalgamation of the flights at STN is because the second aircraft is being used to take the US Ryder Cup team home from Ireland

Thanks phil :ok:

Maxjet - to cancel or combine the JFK/IAD it is likely they don't have an aircraft available, so could be due technical problems.

Olympics - Initial talk about the 2nd runway was to have it built by 2012 which conveniently would be in time for Olympics, if it ever gets approved then it's more likely to be around 2015 due to all the politics. There are no BAA plans to develop STN specifically for the Olympics. To spend the millions of pounds needed on the airport infrastructure for a one off event does not make any business sense. STN will develop according to longer term strategic traffic forecasts, subject of course to the necessary Planning Approvals. Present strategy is for STN to make best use of what it has and develop only when necessary. Six new stands (B737-800 size) in Echo cul-de-sac should open in about 1 month, but no more stands planned at present. A Terminal arrivals extension is also planned.

Indeed. But there are billions (literally) of Olympics money sloshing around looking for a good home. If BAA wanted to spend money on Stansted expansion anyway, it is a one-off opportunity to pretend they are expanding specially for the Olympics, and thereby get some of the funds to help build what they were going to build anyway.

Many Olympics city airports have done exactly this over the years.

daz211 25th Sep 2006 15:14

Well something will have to be done, the terminal is far to small for next years operations never mind 2012 and a couple of B737 stands wont be enough. I would have thought that the powers that be would rather make STN bigger before it was needed but guess not.

To make another point, If anything "touch wood" was to happen at LHR, ie Terror attack, where would all the a/c go, I think that all south east airports need to make room for what if's.
