Technically, Peel Airports still own 100% of DSA. Peel Airports in turn is owned 65% YVRAS, and 35% Peel Holdings.

Teevee 17th Feb 2011 20:37

Yeah Ryan, technically! But you're on the same forums I frequent, so you'll have seen what and who I've seen!;)

eltonioni 22nd Feb 2011 10:32

Shirely Peel Airports are merely an operating company who actually own only a contract to run an airport owned by somebody else, i.e. they own diddlely squat

MUFC_fan 22nd Feb 2011 10:56

i.e. they own diddlely squat

who actually own only a contract to run an airport
Contracts are worth quite a lot of money - so really they do own something quite valuable.

ryansf 22nd Feb 2011 11:15

If you want to put it like that then, the owner is Peel Airports Limited, and the operating company is Doncaster Sheffield Airport Limited. Just as Manchester is owned by Manchester Airports Group, and operated by Manchester Airport PLC.

TANGO100 23rd Feb 2011 00:03

From what I can gather its the runway that interests these guys and also not too much competition, bits that I have heard is that this is something new to the aviation industry and if it does take off it could be massive

ryansf 23rd Feb 2011 09:52

Sounds interesting! Hopefully you'll be able to provide us with more details soon, as I realise it might be a bit secret at the moment.

wawkrk 24th Feb 2011 05:47

If it's the runway that interests them and lack of competition, then it must be long haul.In this case they would also be looking at EMA which has greater potential.

Teevee 24th Feb 2011 09:40

But ...

That depends on the type of 'lack of competition'.

BristowXJ 28th Apr 2011 20:48

Any more news on this at all?

I'm intrigued after the recent developments at Humberside, surely Peel must be under pressure to announce 'something' - that said I guess the Vulcan announcement was impressive and made up for it.

I can't but help think Mr. Morton's announcement in January could be the press being confused over the alleged upcoming BA charters?

pug 29th Apr 2011 00:39

Well something 'quite famously' didn't happen recently, but there will no doubt be announcements in the months to come regarding a few services.

BristowXJ 7th May 2011 16:53

Shame about that, as you say I'm sure they'll be future developments. I suspect Ryanair's presence at DSA will increase, that said their development at HUY to ALC was a surprise (to me at least).

I guess MME must be more of a priority for Peel at the moment, although I'm no expert - Beverley is about as far North as I go. I haven't got a clue about MME, but I must say it's some what an 'odd ball' that intrigues me.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Vulcan on this thread :ok: Definitely going to try and see if I can get down tomorrow to see it depart for Abingdon - should be well worth the trek. I don't normally take a fancy to military a/c, but I don't know there's just something special about it!

I suspect Ryanair's presence at DSA will increase
what makes you think that? Have yoou seen the loads?

fr-

BristowXJ 7th May 2011 18:29

FR- I haven't. I guess it would help if expanded on my comment as it suggests I 'know' something.

I really think LCC's are suited to DSA and Ryainair obviously already fly from there. As we've seen Easyjet's operations at DSA didn't work out, so the only other LCC's that come to mind to fly from DSA are that of FlyBe, Jet2 and Wizz Air.

Jet2 I think is out of the question being up the road at LBA and FlyBe & Wizz Air already fly out of DSA. I can't see Wizz Air's presence growing hugely for the foreseeable future as obviously they specialise in serving Eastern Europe and as for FlyBe I'm not knowledgeable of their current circumstance, but I personally haven't heard of any talk of them developing at DSA.

With the ALC service I assume Ryanair are testing the local demand. If all works out fine, surely HUY isn't large enough to cater for Ryanair to expand upon in the long term? To be honest from a GA perspective I'd love HUY to stay quiet from scheduled activity and more air taxi's and GA movements as it's a great place to fly in/out of at the moment.

LBIA 8th May 2011 17:53

So i see it was not good news regarding the release of the summer 2012 holiday programmes this week for DSA. Thomson's are dropping 1 of its current 3x based 737 aircraft.

The Airline/Tour Operator is axeing routes to Bourgas, Heraklion, Larnaca & Zante. It is also reducing capacity on service's to Bodrum, Dalaman, Enfidha & Palma.

I wonder if anyone will step in to replace these routes from DSA?

pug 8th May 2011 18:06

I agree, being in the same boat, but I would much prefer MAG to keep hold of HUY, and that happening rests on a growth in passenger numbers in the medium term.

I dont see how FR could not expand at both to some extent. ALC is proving popular from both HUY and DSA.

Hi Air - Fill thy purse with money

A glance at history doesn't bode well for this type of venture. Even in good economic times this sort of niche, low capacity service has usually foundered. Unless they are prepared to ride the inevitable early losses it is unlikely to last six weeks. Upmarket niche services can only exist where there is an upmarket demand, which in the UK means London, not Doncaster.
Doubtful what value will be seen in personal service on a less than one hour sector. Suckling sustained it for several years in the 1980s but that was from Ipswich/Cambridge - the wealthy south-east, and in a boom economy. The higher frequency, lower fares, interlining etc offering by KLM from several airports not far away will be more attractive to the majority of business travellers.

Cazza_fly 9th May 2011 15:27

Agreed. Unfortunately the market around Doncaster is more geared towards a low-cost airline serving the route. Obviously KLM would work but that's because of the onward worldwide connections it can seemlessly offer not to mention it is well known in the surrounding areas.Even the business passenger market will look elsewhere for the cheapest availabilty to save money these days. Though it will be great if it does well, for the price you are going to pay, apart from being able to flying from your local airport,it just doesn't offer anything else different than flying with say bmibaby from EMA just 50 minutes away and then still be able to get another couple of return flights out of the money saved!!!

HiAir

Enough said - looks like an ''Apprentice'' type so far up his own you know what! Keep well clear.

paully 9th May 2011 16:18

Arnt we just a tad past the 1st April???? :8

LBIA 9th May 2011 16:28

And here is the flight schedule for this new once daily service by Hi Air. They will be using a 19 seater BAe Jetstream 31 aircarft.

HI001 = DSA 07:30 AMS 10:00 = Monday to Friday
HI002 = AMS 18:40 DSA 19:10 = Monday to Friday

The airline website is at HiAir but it looks as though flights are not bookable online so reservations need to be taken over the phone on the following number +44 (0) 333 900 1800

I wonder how long this will last with prices like they are offering? I hope it dose work out for the young lad, But I get a feeling that they just wont be able to compete with bmi baby at EMA. Jet2 at LBA and KLM at both nearby LBA & HUY. I do wish them good look...

geordiejet 9th May 2011 17:30

For someone who apparently ran a successful IT consultancy firm that website is really crappy (what can a 16 year old know to become an IT consultant?).

Besides this type of operation and these young Branson wannabes don't have a good track record. I'd stay well clear. Wonder if this child will offer a PTF scheme? Alpha1, Vars--- Express, Adam Taits fake airline, and my personal favourite Victor Bassey's Excelsis Airways (granted this was nit a kid. But it made me laugh). I can't see it lasting.

And ive read there are no plans for other routes. So it appears the aircraft will spend a whole day in AMS. Thats a long boring day for the crew. Hardly efficient.

Good luck. I think you will need it.

Mr Mac 9th May 2011 17:54

I have not used Doncaster yet (wrong end of Yorkshire for me) but given Doncaster location and the problems that appear to stem from not being able to get KLM to move there I wonder if anyone at the airport has spoken to Lufthansa. The nearest airports with a service to Germany by them are Man, NCL, Birm, and I would have thought that there would be enough business from Humberside and East Midlands as well as South Yorkshire to cover one or more flights to Frankfurt with the onward conections to the rest of the world as offered by KLM. Also I beleive they are trying to expand into the reigons within the UK as KLM have done when I have talked to their crews (use them from Man instead of BA via LHR). Any thoughts ?

New "Virtual" Airline

Offering flights to Amsterdam. No operator details yet

HiAir

BristowXJ 14th May 2011 16:54

compton3bravo, in fairness having trawled through the Wiki link and onto Hayat's website it does appear he's not as self-obsessed as this years Apprentice candidates - that said why on earth Minister's are being advised by teens I'll never know!? Wish they'd listen to us more with the amount of bloody tax we give them through aviation!

Timings are good, but I just don't understand how any organisation would want to incur the expense of having an a/c parked up all day @ AMS? Surely if they utilised the a/c more their ticket prices would drop?

Will be interesting to see how they get on, yes prices are less than KLM @ HUY when booked last minute, but that's not going to sell it.

DSA would far more benefit from more LCC ops, if they can make it work well good for DSA but they sure are going to need some luck.

Helen49 15th May 2011 08:31

I would hope that rather than depending on 'luck', they have a sound safety case and a sound business case before they cause distress to passengers, staff, airports etc. Still sounds like a basket case to me!
