Having just checked those papers again, they say that stoping the flights is part of the reorganisation program, and that Tenedora K, the group that bought 95% of Mexicana shares recently, is looking for new investors in orther to bring casho to the airline. Also, Mexican transports commisioner (secretary or minister) says the airline is not in bankrupcy so as to be dissolved... :uhoh:

Bearing in mind that Mexicana is one of the oldest airlines and that roughly 8000 people are (in)directly employed, I find it hard to believe that the government is allowing one of their flag carrier to die that quickly.

Suspending operations does not (yet) mean liquidation. Remember, Spirit had stopped flying, too. Maybe not an appropriate comparison, but one can be hopeful ... :(

I'd venture a guess that finding a way to restore the grade from Cat 2 to Cat 1 is the only way this new company will be able to return the airline to a profitable status.

Not sure how one does that if one is not operating.

Mexicana's gone Bust!

Alerted by a friend whose kid is stuck in Mexico I find nothing on the news sites or search engine, but Mexicana's own site appears to confirm the news.

It was in the financials; newspapers, that is. Difficult times. It's being reported the company could not come to an agreement with their unions. The genesis of the company's real problems, however, stemmed from the disaster that Mexico has become, vis-a-vis the drug war and its effect on tourism, that being the heart of the country's appeal. Sorry to hear Mexicana has folded. In the months to come there may be more such stories, worldwide, for markets have turned. Doesn't look good. But that's another story...
