Route into Catania - Sicily
 

We are flying into Catania by Britannia (Ex LGW) on 15 Oct and my beloved would like to get some good video of Mt Etna if possible - having flown many times into Tenerife via the anti clockwise circuit of the Island to GCTS's runway 26 - and got some splendid video of Mt Tiede.

Question is - what is the normal route into Catania LICC and which side of the aeroplane should we sit. Does the "normal" approach do a clockwise circuit of Mt Etna or miss it entirely. ???

It has been more than 10 years since I operated there but back then, comimng from the North, the normal approach was an anti clockwise DME arc with the mountain on the left. Sit on the left for both arrival and departure.

I would imagine the route would be discussed on the day by the flight deck and perhaps a route planner on the displays. Not bing silly or antyhing but I would imagine it is not acceptable to sicuss routes in current climate of terrorism????? I am sure I will have some suitably curt replies but tha's mt opinion!

Most probably on your left on the Approach.

All STARS/SIDs etc are published in Jeppesen etc and readily available for purchase at suppliers. They're probably all on the web somewhere for the FlightSim guys as well, although I haven't looked.

Does everything in life have to be squelched on the basis that it might be used by some imagined terrorist ? Are we all over-imaginative Hollywood producers ? When was an arrival anywhere ever compromised by someone getting hold of the arrivals procedure ? The only threats I ever heard of were on short finals, where it's quite obvious to anybody the track followed !

Maybe we should also ban all road maps (might be used by terrorists to get to the airport in the first place) and ban Coca-Cola (once found to have been drunk by terrorists while they were waiting).

Absolutely correct WHBM. My next move will be when I'm next in the cherokee at Fairoaks to look into the Transair shop and browse their charts. No doubt I can find an Aerad or Jeppesen with the airways routing and a Sicilian Topo chart or a Fontanarosa chart in the Italy book that'll give me a vague clue of the SIDS and STARS.

It amazes me sometimes that with all this information available I can get into the Transair shop for folk with long flowing beards and ankle length robes doing their research.

If I look at the TAF on our wonderful Met Office site before I go I can probably guess the landing direction and thus the arraival routing.

I just thought it was a good idea to ask if anybody who actually flew there could give me some help and guidance t reinforce my "flight planning".

Always one isn't there ?
