Well, i heard this little snippet in the lift on the way to the crew room the other day.... anyone care to comment...

Air Atlanta Icelandic who have recently bought a majority share (if not all) in Excel Airways and have also bought Icelandic carrier Islandsflug have now got their beady little eyes on another UK charter carrier - Astraeus.....

Isnt there a limit to the number of UK registered companies a non UK business can own in one particular sector, without the matter being referred to the monopolies commission?

Joyce Tick 24th Jan 2005 11:33

..the trouble with the Monopolies Commission is that there's only one of them....

Beanbag 24th Jan 2005 13:00

NikNak, no, there's no limit to the number of UK companies a foreign entity can own. The Monopolies Commission might get involved if the combined entity would have a huge market share, but that doesn't sound likely in this case.

Yes I heard this rattling around too. Hope it's not true.

Would you have any news on what their plans would be for AEU and the pilots.

Are AEU still operating the Iceland Express routes?

Puritan 25th Jan 2005 07:58

opsjockey – If my memory serves me right, during the summer last year, Excel ( or was it Air Atlanta ? ) made a speculative bid for Astraeus – and it’s a reference to this that you probably heard in the lift.

Psr777 - Astraeus do indeed still operate the Iceland Express routes ( via a 'damp lease' arrangement, where AEU supply B737’s & pilots, and IEX supply cabin crew and passengers ). Coincidentally, AEU also provide the same service for Air Asia ( with 2 x B733's based in Kuala Lumpur ) and are likewise imminently to provide the same too for FlyBe ( 2 x B733's to be based at Birmingham and 1 x B733 at Exeter ).

Islandsflug are also opreating Iceland Express routes for STN and CPH.

Since Jan 1st Air Atlanta Icelandic Air Atlanta Europe Islandsflug and Excel are all part of the same group; the Avion Group, but continue to operate independently for the moment.......

No one seems to know whats gonna happen to us minions!

I've just been informed it's the other way round Excell have bought out Air Atlanta Europe. Apparantly there are a host of jobs for Excell advertyised in Flight Int'l

Anyone have any more info??

Mr @ Spotty M 26th Jan 2005 17:12

litow

You will find it was the Air Atlanta group who brought out Excel Airways.
However they may be finishing with Air Atlanta Europe and could only be going to use the Excel AOC, which might be behind the flight advert.
