Wink An Air New Zealand collapse may be New Australian's gain.

If the proposed commercial arrangement between Qantas Airways and Air New Zealand doesn't go ahead and Air New Zealand collapses, the new Australian domestic airline venture of Pacific Southwest Engineering Pty Limited (PSE) may invoke its international expansion plans much sooner than anticipated.

PSE doesn't believe the NZ government should allow Air New Zealand to collapse like the Australian Government allowed to happen to Ansett Australia but New Zealand is an important market for PSE's venture and PSE would like to think that, despite the Ansett experience, that its new airline can work with Air New Zealand independently of Qantas. Certainly PSE would like to believe that at some stage its new airline can buy into the New Zealand carrier to provide a truly competive trans- Tasman marketplace with benefits flowing to both sides.

Both Qantas, VirginBlue and Air New Zealand are important employers and transport providers in the region. The region doesn't need another collapse but it must be said that keeping a competive environment is healthier for everyone.
