About time someone saw the potential of NCL as a low-cost hub. Excellent news for the North-East.

Any guesses as to the first 3 European destinations? How about: Nice, Amsterdam and Malaga

VERY BAD NEWS for TEESSIDE,they chose NCL but the operation would have been just as viable at Teesside. Its the same catchment area but with lower costs.Hopefully BMI Baby will see the benefits and create another Liverpool!!

Tesside doesnt have the same catchment area at all ! They are 40 miles apart ! People from MME (and certainly to west) will travel to leeds. NCL includes northumbria, scotland etc in its area. Added to the fact that they already operate into ncl.

I agree. This is good news for Newcastle, and I hope they are a raging success.

Mind you, it could make those Scousers look like angels on a Friday night Amsterdam! Anyone remember that on "Airline"!?!

I suppose this could also affect GA at newcastle. The new airport manager is putting landing fees up to 25 pounds making newcastle the second most expensive place to land in the UK bar Edinburgh.

There are also assumptionas that the new manager wants rid of GA altogether from newcastle, apparently he succeeded at Bristol in removing GA from there and now plans to do exactly the same at newcastle.

These are all speculations but from what ive heard, hes also downgraded the fire service from CAT 1 to Cat 7, layed off about 9 firemen.

There are also speculations that hes planning on building Britannia Airways hangars where the GA hangars are now.

Im not sure if all of these are correct, but from what ive heard around the airport, this seems to be the case.

Thumbs up

This is great for the North East, not only for geordies going abroad but for attracting tourists to the North East. Newcastle has in the past been voted the 8TH best party city in the world, getting there cheaply is what it needs.
As for Teesside airport have you ever tried getting there on public transport?

A Britannia Airways hangar at Newcastle on the GA area? Not at all likely.

dundoniandean, "start shaking BE"
Dream on sunshine !
Maybe we should all be still shaking after Easyjet came to Belfast and were supposed to 'finish' us in Northern Ireland, yet here we are well over a year later with better than ever pax figures in NI. What about the Dash 8 crews 'shaking' in their boots when Go announced they were going to compete on the BFS-BRS route. A 737 versus a Dash 8-200 !.....15 months later, the Dash-8 still going strong on the route.
IF Easyjet do operate NCL-CDG, I'm sure FLYBE has an attractive enough product to give them a good run for their money !

Regarding LCCs vs HCCs

LCCs often enlargen the market pie, benefiting all. There's a book by Lawton which graphically illustrates (literally) 'the Ryanair effect' on the London-Venice market. Instead of stealing market share from the incumbents, they actually managed to boost demand across the board....so perhaps peversely, LCCs can in some instances boost load factors on the HCCs.......although I suspect Easyjet are aiming to grab market share as opposed to creating new demand, focused as they appear to be, on serving the same airports as their higher-cost competitors.

Red face Leave Teesside Alone

Oi!!!! Stop slating Teesside!!

1. There's a train service to Teesside!!
2. There's a bus service to Teesside!!
3. Its dead easy by car!!

If anyone is having trouble getting there then get a GPS!!! (Joke).

Teesside is in the same catchment area. Anyone who lives up here will testify to that. People use BMI instead of NCL to get to London. Having used this service a number of times I know.

Will it affect Teesside?? WHo knows. The rumours at Teesside are that BMI are going to up their ops but it is a rumour. And a further rumour is that if this happens then GA will be affected and pressure put on to scale it down.

So maybe we will all go to Fishburn or Bagby.????

Piper, I doubt NCL was Cat1, but anyway, Cat 7 is a higher level of fire service than Cat 1, meaning basically seven trucks instead of one.

*end of nit pick*

Well from what io hear tey are planning on getting rid of the bellman hangar and everyhting related to GA on the southside. That might also explain why they just built a new taxiway which doesnt go anywhere, maybe it will lead to a big britannia hangar, lol

All speculation but i dunno where anyone found out about Britannia, from what they're saying though it all sounds pretty serious.

Piper
Britannia looked at Newcastle about 4-5 years ago, in reality it was only to get a better deal out of Luton.
GA is not the only thing coming under the spotlight with the new part owners of NCL things are a changing!
I wish airports in this country would look to the US where GA (pre 9/11) is seen as the breeding block for aviation and a benefit to the local area. Look at the business men who fly to meetings them selves in ya bog standard Cessna/Piper, you can't land here but we would love you to build your factory still!!!!!!!

Still back to the point where would you like Easy to fly to?

Piper Warrior Pilot - GA has not been removed at Bristol - it's still a very strong aspect of the BRS scene. And it won't be removed from NCL either. The new taxiway on the far side was built to facilitate a new cargo ramp which the airport intended to build on the south side adjacent to the old Gill Air hangar. There always used to be a NCL airport authority policy that low-cost carriers weren't alowed to operate a route that was already operated by another airline. I gues that's all changed! Initial destinations; I think they'll fly to Go outstations to start with, so probably BCN, PMI and AGP, but you never know they might try Copenhagen (NCL is partly owned by the Danes and there's no flights linking the two airports), Orly or Rotterdam. Three based a/c initially, upto five in 2004.....
