From Flying In Ireland, pictures of the progress on the north runway, and the redesignation of the existing runway.

When did the new ATC Tower at Dublin open? Or has it not opened yet?

It's the new way Google are working - they are removing mobile items. There are a number of threads on here.

I don't believe it is operational yet, but should be by the end of the year.

The Irish Government has imposed the toughest lockdown in the EU (they used the success of New Zealand as an example) and introduced mandatory hotel quarantine for many countries. Yet we have an open border with our non EU neighbours who have all the variants of concern our Government claims we need to keep out. They had a go slow issuing and renewing passports. Our national broadcaster RTE became the voice of the Government and instilled fear on the population. Air travel is a dirty word and the Government isn't going to find a solution or permit the Green Passport anytime soon. DUB will remain empty and business will go elsewhere. The jobs will be lost but the Government Ministers will retire on full pension and pass the mess on to the next Government.

The tower is ready to go and will probably open in autumn once testing and commissioning of the new runway starts in mid summer. Construction is due to be finished by July.

Don't expect scheduled traffic on the new runway until after 1 Jan 2022.

I do worry. Looks like we'll reopen the border at least 3 months after the rest of Europe. Business will go elsewhere. Don't think we'll see the likes of HKG, PEK, PVG or other less traditional routes returning anytime soon. We'll be very reliant on EI for long haul, if they're still around at this rate. DAA lost 280 mil last year, EI double that.

I believe it has been used in anger in trials on live traffic but full ops closer to the end of this year. Hope was to get it up and running about 6 months before it was actually needed for the new runway, but there's all kinds of restrictions on the operations there being challenged at the moment so who knows really.

I see that Cork is to close for a number of weeks to allow deep maintenance on the runways there, anyone know if there's plans for 28L to close for heavy maint once the northern runway is operational? IIRC it was given a new surface a few years ago during the nights.

Irish Government finally allowing travel again from July 19th. EU Covid passport system will be adhered to, but there will be zero restrictions on people who are fully vaccinated. A reciprocal arrangement with the UK and US is currently being negotiated on top of the EU system, ie if they let fully vaccinated Irish people in without restrictions then we'll do the same for their citizens who wish to enter Ireland. Hopefully this is the beginning of the recovery in our industry.

Sounds promising... Regarding 28R/10L, I know it was due for October/November '21 originally, but have seen on the Eurocontrol portal it is now pushed back to operational for March 2022, is that true? Bit of a blow to the timeline but understandable.

Fairly sure I read elsewhere they were delayed due the restrictions.

We're the 4th fastest vaccinating country in the world now, only behind Canada, Sweden and Portugal. Light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully mostly good news on these threads from now on.

Are we still the only EU country where the army meets some passengers and puts them into mandatory hotel quarantine for 14 days? Are we the only EU country where it was illegal to travel? Where the police stopped you at the airport and fined you?

I travelled to Dublin yesterday from Germany. I'm fully vaccinated (2 shots of Pfizer) . I have an EU digital COVID vaccination certificate on my mobile phone. I had to get a PCR test to enter the country and I was told I have to self quarantine for 14 days after travel and that I can exit quarantine early by contacting a Doctor to arrange a PCR test with a non detected result at least 5 days after travel. The Irish population have been shielded from the type of freedom of movement the rest of Europe had and there is a lot of scare mongering on our national radio and TV RTE so I can't see a return to travel anywhere near the numbers previous. Only yesterday the CMO said don't travel if you have children. We have to live!!

I read a survey which states in the EU, Spain and Germany have the highest share of population that is fully vaccinated at 39.5% and 37.6% respectively. Ireland is at 36.2%.

Were these figures for entire population or just the currently eligible adult population?

According to Ireland’s Covid Data hub, 56.2% of the 16+ population has been fully vaccinated while 69.8% have received the first dose. A total of 4.8m vaccines have been administered, 2.7m first doses and 2.1 second doses.

Either way, it further strengthens the argument to reopen, albeit carefully.

As of Monday, all you need is your EU digital Covid vaccination certificate and the receipt for your electronic submission of your Irish Passenger Locator Form. Until Monday, being vaccinated doesn't do you any favours on entry into Ireland, but you can book your free fifth-day PCR test on line.
