Emerald Airlines is building an overall picture of shoddy service.

Especially with FR bitting at there heals and even Easy starting SOU. They need to consolidate flights routes and wise up. Again too much too soon. I remember in the olden days Capital doing the same. Over expansion and then getting involved in 146 aircraft. Then collapse. Is the EI 10year deal got a financial stake in Emerald?

Capital's parent collapsed, and the whole thing collapsed I think Capital were doing quite well and didn't have that many routes. Maybe 6. There is a lot of competition, but the current challenges are down to crew shortages. Strike action is likely to arise soon.

On a commercials basis, if FR want to fight for share with £15 one way fares at scale, then there will be pain felt for all competitors. Ryanair seem adamant to make BFS work this time and you can be sure Emerald will be a target.

Quick history - Capital had six 360-300s and two 146-200s at the time of its collapse. The airline brought down the parent company as cross-guarantees were called. It was a fair size of operation and losing money despite high loads.

Back to today, key issues are crewing and late delivery of aircraft - although one has to wonder if the aircraft were not late, whether they would have the crews to fly them !

I hear Emerald are having a reasonably high turnover of pilots. Jobs market is pretty buoyant, lots of jet operators hiring which makes it difficult for TP operators to get their numbers right. Especially difficult I would suspect if you are establishing and growing an operation. The recipe for pilot retention is very simple: good rosters and market rates or above for salary - skimp on either and the front door will never stop revolving.

Massively impressed with the new Aspire Lounge at BHD

Was there yesterday - bright, comfortable, massive range of drinks, snacks and hot food (much better than any other Aspire lounge in the UK - presumably due to BA/KL/LH contracts)

Well worth it if you have a Priority Pass or even to prebook and pay. Two hours (and a good few quality red wines) went by very quickly

Sadly, I had the opposite experience. My wife and myself entered the lounge at about 5.45pm last Monday evening. There was very little hot food, which soon disappeared and a very limited choice of cold food. I did ask if the hot food was to be re-stocked and was told that more was being prepared. I saw several people walk up to the counter looking for food, but there was none. At about 6.50 pm they started to bring more food out, almost one hour after I had asked. By that stage almost no pax left. They brought out a large pot of potato cubes at 6.55 pm as we were were leaving the lounge for our flight. At that stage there was only one more departure, Easyjet to Gatwick. We have seen comments on the web from other pax who had the same experience as us. Not good when you have paid £30 approx to be there.

Our son travelled over on the 7am Easyjet to Gatwick on the Tuesday morning to meet us. He arrived at the airport about 5.50am to find the queue for security started outside up the side of the building. By the time he got through security his flight was boarded and he was one of the last to board. AS the airport pursue more services from Easyjet, they will quickly ruin the reputation they had built as the small, friendly, hassle -free, quick security airport. Everything that Belfast International wasn't, we were told.

The issue that every small airport faces as they chase volume - careful what you wish for!
