EK A359

Total seats - 312

29 more seats than QR - 283

QR - 4 more J seats but no PE. EK’s PE will be very popular.

Fantastic news and another A350 (my favourite) at EDI. The timings suit the airport too.

Well done to all those that were suggesting that this would happen too.

There has been rumours gathering pace about an evening QR departure but now with Emirates back it will be interesting to see.

Delighted to see them back, also with a better schedule for the airport to accommodate as the last time Emirates was here it was on the ground for 6-7 hours.

How long before it goes double daily and GLA either gets ditched or down gauged from an A380?

Don't mean to ruffle any feathers in a GLA/EDI war, but the eventual return to EDI was obvious I think when GLA never increased back to double daily after Covid.

QR have responded by dropping fares, but not by much. Very modest reductions. This could suggest that advanced bookings is very strong. Re the evening departure time with EK, as of today, fares with QR to Sydney via Doha for example is cheaper than EK via Dubai. By around £100. I wouldn’t be surprised to see QR add a third daily on a 788, to mirror the EK evening departure. We may not have long to wait. The tenth anniversary of QR at EDI is at the end of this month. Would be good PR to announce something then.

Interesting they seem to have opted for 7 abreast for premium economy. I'm fairly sure most other carriers are 8 abreast for PE on their A350s?

Emirates are a fairly exceptional carrier, the BAU rules often don't seem to apply. I note Etihad and Qatar picked one of EDI/GLA, Emirates should be able to make both work. They offer LHR/LGW/STN to London and offer not only BHX/MAN but also NCL in England, so I would be surprised if they withdrew from GLA, given their monopoly on the West Coast fills a daily A380.

Looks like the usual suspects on another messageboard are taking this very badly.

Just like the transatlantic traffic, my prediction is Emirates eventually abandon GLA. If GLA can't even sustain a bread and butter route to SOU what chance does it have with this?

An idea where the car park will be located? Hopefully this help take a bit of strain off the check in/bag drop queues.

Edinburgh Airport 'free parking' twilight bag drop move

Edinburgh Airport is trialling free parking in its “one-hour” parking area for some customers who wish to take advantage of an extended twilight bag drop service offered by four airlines the night before passengers travel.

The offer applies to passengers with a car parking booking in official Edinburgh Airport car parks.

Edinburgh Airport noted that Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and British Airways currently offer a twilight bag drop service.

It said: “Passengers using Edinburgh Airport’s popular Twilight bag drop service will benefit from the service offering increased hours and days as more people are encouraged to drop off their bags the night before.”

Adam Wilson, chief operating officer at Edinburgh Airport, said: “The Twilight service was very popular last summer, so much so that it continued into the winter months, so we know there is a demand for the service and that passengers like to use it where possible.

“We’ve worked with airlines to extend days and hours of operation where possible, and we hope that benefits passengers who have those early morning flights and want to head straight to security on the morning of their flight.”

He added: “We’re also trialling free Twilight parking for customers with official Edinburgh Airport car park bookings to encourage more people to use the service. That will be kept under constant evaluation to judge the effectiveness of it and to determine the next steps for the Twilight bag drop service.”

Edinburgh Airport said: “Passengers with a car parking booking in official Edinburgh Airport car parks will…be able to access the one-hour parking area for free the night before travel, making the Twilight bag drop service even easier and more convenient to use.

“The trial of the free use of the one-hour parking area for customers with official Edinburgh Airport car park bookings will be assessed throughout the summer schedule to determine next steps.

“Customers with existing bookings will be able to take advantage of the free area, while customers yet to make bookings will be informed of the free parking area in their confirmation emails.”

Edinburgh Airport’s website lists the standard charges for the one-hour parking area, which is close to the terminal, as £6 for up to 15 minutes, £12 for 15 to 30 minutes, and £15 for 30 minutes to one hour.

Some of the folk over on the GLA forum have gone into meltdown over the announcement. The weird airport fanboism is pretty cringing to read.

ah the convenience and speed of air travel!

You can now spend the night before traveling driving to the Airport as well.........

I, personally, will send a servant in the third best carriage to do the deed

Has any major UK airport had a relatively bigger fall than GLA? I started flying out of there when it was the UK's 5th busiest airport after LHR/LGW/MAN/STN!
That's a BAA stat, I think it's right but the others played catch-up and EDI basically took the whole of Scottish long haul off GLA, which ironically has done the same to PIK.
It's a shame, the place is like a ghost town, full of past memories of better days.

A great get for EDI and I have a feeling this is a sign of things to come for Emirates in Scotland. Meanwhile in the West AGS is refinancing it's loans at GLA. I expect GLA will hang on with some bare hub service to LHR/LGW, DUB, AMS etc and the usual regional UK and med flights but we are not really that far off in reality from the one strong Central Scotland airport people spoke about for years. What does GLA have left over EDI, Icelandair? Killing off the competition by a thousand cuts.

Air Transat is the only other long haul player of note in market that is loyal to GLA, indeed dropped it's weekly EDI-YYZ flight a while back. Rather surprised they haven't revisited that decision, I know Air Canada are at EDI but they used to compete alongside Mapleflot at both PIK and GLA.

No idea how I managed to forget that. I expect GLA to hang onto that with no competition and it's a lowish frequency route serving a big West of Scotland diaspora. I can see a West Coast US service or flights to likes of MSP/DFW/DEN/IAH to EDI before GLA even gets a summer seasonal to NYC again.

Another runway closure, what a surprise.

DHL and ASL look like they are diverting away.

QR holding around Newcastle.

Or maintain the one they've got properly. But when you're in hock to shareholders (as are most UK airports) proper facilities and maintenance rank below return on investment. Thats the UK for you.
