Who is putting up the money for the hotel to be built ? Southend airport (possibly via a loan from a bank) or somebody else ?

Southend Airport Co. Ltd is the applicant for this development. They now have 3 years from the date of the appeal decision in which to commence the development (11 August 2024). However, there are a number of conditions which must be satisfied first before construction can commence.
If a bloke with a shovel spends a couple of days digging a small trench... does that mean planning permission remains valid forever ? Yes, I'm being a bit facetious, but wondering how much work has to be done by what date, if the people with the money want to wait a bit until pax return in large numbers

EZY ill have numbers on what pax and from where the airport can generate. I wouldn't be surprised to see them back on a w pattern basis or EZY Europe but whether it will be enough for the airport may be questionable.

It’ll most likely be a hotel operator who of course would then provide the airport with an income through rent. In the same way an application might be put in by eg Crown Estates for a retail park, with Aldi or whoever coming in with subsequent revisions to take the permission and build it to their spec

Yes, last Faro now seems to be 25 Sept, Alicante & Malaga continues until 30 Oct.
Last Barcelona 24 Sept so could be dropping to a single based airframe for last month.
I won't say anything about Wizzair as I will get jumped upon.

Reus may already have been ending in Sep although I could be wrong. Certainly cutbacks aren’t unique to SEN or even just to FR. A route I was looking at with Jet2 (amber) has gone and another has at least one flight removed. It’s going to be a tough few weeks particularly with rumours of Oct restrictions. People won’t be keen to risk it.

Our published priorities for 2021 are to establish a constructive community engagement plan, establish a noise forum following best practice guidance from ICANN, adopt the ICAO 9829 balanced approach as the basis for noise planning and build on our noise abatement operational procedures. We are making good progress toward our 2021 priorities.
However, the airport has confirmed the quieter planes are a “long term objective” and it is on track with its priorities for this year, including establishing a community engagement plan.

No Wizz then. Were they refused access or did they change their mind? I hope they will return in the Spring with a new SEN base. It will be very grim if they don’t.

I have no idea how many at SEN are on furlough, but I’m guessing there’s quite a few. Today is their last day earning.
Two years ago with the airport on a serious up none of this seemed possible.

Economies of scale dictate that high passenger volumes means potential profits. Three Wizz flights a week plus two from Widenoe, which can’t be booked, means certain additional loses. SEN needs a based operator as while other airports are picking up SEN is going in the opposite direction.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek with the Wideroe comment. I guess what we don’t know is whether it was Wizz or SEN that pulled the winter flights. It might be the case that SEN was happy to handle them but Wizz cut capacity for the season
