Today's Sun Express came from Izmir but departs to Gaziantep, not your traditional holiday destination.

Gaziantep is the sixth largest city in Turkey (over two million population) and is definitely a VFR destination. I noticed Titan helping Wizz out today.

Cllr Hussain told Bedfordshire Live: "I had the immense pleasure of delivering on a manifesto pledge of a Hackney Carriage rank at Luton Airport albeit in a temporary location in the drop off zone until the proper rank is constructed."This is excellent news for local drivers who can finally work from Luton Airport again while removing polluting old vehicles from our town.
This story is all spin and bull. When the contract was first awarded the local taxi drivers were banned from the airport as it was all about money. After a year of no taxis due to a disagreement over fees due to Covid LLAOL offered space in the drop off zone as long as the local drivers pay a barrier fee plus a yearly rental which is a 4 figure sum per car. Now the council is claiming the glory when they didn’t give a monkey’s or offer any support.

Is the great flight only experience over, a few friends of mine would only consider a package from a single supplier for next year?

Sounds like reasonable commercial practice to me.

Pay the barrier fee… LOL. If it had £1 for the amount of times taxi drivers tried to beat the barrier. One cheeky scamp tried to charge me once for a barrier charge despite not paying it.

Wizzair just picked up 15 pairs of slots (ex-Norweigan) at Gatwick and will increase based aircraft from 1 to 5 next year. Will be interesting to see if any of these destinations are added from there.

These are all served by EZY and some by FR though aren't they.

Just too much competition on those routes, poor yield.
Can't see WUK running them from Gatters, more likely their core Eastern European routes.
Free up some capacity at Luton to try more new things.

Looks like a whole number of Wizz Air's new routes at Gatwick which are currently flown from Luton, will no longer be operated and shifted south of the river Thames!

Looks like it includes:
  • Rome FCO
  • Milan MXP
  • Bari
  • Catania
  • Naples
  • Faro
  • Athens
  • Vienna
  • Alicante
As some of these routes are only seasonal, they are currently only operating on and off from Luton between now and April 2022, and from April/May 2022 these routes completely dry up at LTN.

Obviously there is more money to be made on these routes from Gatwick!

Seems a bit of a backward step and the airline is going back to its routes focusing on LTN to Central/Eastern Europe. There are still numerous Mediterranean and leisure routes being flown by Wizz from LTN, but makes you wonder if these routes are being put on notice and will gradually shift, as and when Wizz gets more slots at LGW.

During the pandemic, with most routes operating at a lower frequency, I guess it was possible to operate the majority of them all from LTN, but as we come out of the pandemic and the airport is unable to release any more slots at the moment to Wizz or other airlines, I guess they need to shift a number of routes to Gatwick as they ramp up daily frequencies on other long standing routes.

I guess in some ways makes sense to fly the routes they have chsen from one London airport instead of operating a fragmented schedule from both airports.

Any guesses as to what Wizz will do with the free slots Luton ? Add some more frequencies on current routes to eastern Europe ? (Re-)Open routes to the likes of Kutaisi, Nis, Yerevan, Kazakhstan and the UAE ? Hand them back to ACL ? Something else ?

I heard a rumour that an increase to 19m passengers that LBC granted to themselves might not be 19m yet.......

Hand back, no way. RYR & EZY would suck them up in a flash. Expect a few surprises as they test new markets. If it works do the same at LGW......makes business sense.
As it seems no 80/20 rule being applied for S22 they can afford to be flexible.

Quite a few destinations are moving with 4x based Wizz A321s to Gatwick. Luton Rising - really?
