A number of commentators say that the flight bans are pointless because this observed "new" virus strain has already been found in a number of other countries.
Travel bans can still make a lot of sense, for as long as you have reason to believe that a plane load of travellers from the UK could introduce a number of new spreaders and therefore speed up the spreading of the new variant at even faster pace.
Fewer spreaders does buy you (some) time as a government, even if the variant is already in circulation.
Clearly there is also a useful element to this in terms of warning people to simply not travel, full stop, as the situation remains unpredictable.
And yes, who knows, also provides a nice test-run/cover-up for End of Transition period related issues on both sides, but wouldn't believe that this was the key driver here.

From what I understand, flights inbound to the UK are operating normally. The return flights are operating sans passengers (I assume belly freight is still flown).. From a legal point, my take is that airlines cannot simply cancel the whole flight if only one leg is subject to restrictions without having to pay EU compensation and possibly damages to passengers stranded on the continent. So I guess those with lots of passengers connecting from long-haul flights (and thus faced with six-digit compensation claims) are more inclined to operate than others.

Most Spanish citizens are not allowed to travel freely around their own country so the ones from the U.K have an advantage in getting to their preferred Christmas destination.

Greece is not banning UK flights but imposing stricter measures..Travellers arriving from UK, aside from a Negative PCR test max 72h before arrival and a complete PLF form, will have to be quarantined to their stated address for10 days, or until the day of departure if their stay is less than that.After the 10-day quarantine, they will have to repeat and have again a negative PCR test result before quarantine is lifted..Immediate effect from 22Dec -7th Jan

No, I agree with the sentiment expressed in that article, but travel bans aren't there to kill the virus and it's mutations stone dead; they are there to reduce the speed of transmission across the globe and buy time for the various national health systems whilst the vaccination programmes now getting underway in various countries reduce Covid-19s capacity for killing and hospitalising so many people.
If we, as a nation, nay, as the human race, are happy to see our relatives seriously ill, possibly dead, then by all means take the view that we lift all restrictions, and accept the inevitable consequences. Most of the world's political leaders prefer try to keep a balance between the economy and public health; Trump was tipping the scales in favour of the economy and look at the result. Many other nations have chosen a rather more public health biased policy. I appreciate that this makes things very hard for those working in commercial aviation; I can assure you that my future son in law feels the same about his industry, hospitality, which he feels has been (unfairly) treated. I feel sure, if I asked him, he'd say that foreign travel should be more heavily restricted rather than hospitality.

Now we have put new restrictions on South Africa as they have their own super spreader mutant. Shame the world was so slow when it came to China. Lessons learned? Not yet

Mutations
So we have a number of flights every evening to mainland Europe,Middle East etc from Jo'burg and Cape Town,But the mutation only occurs at Heathrow Terminals 2&5.Funny old game.

What you don’t look for you don’t find might sum up some counties efforts. Wonder if the French have been carrying out checks at the Calais jungle? Not a million miles from Kent

London is now suffering because they were kept out of the higher tiers far longer than they should've been.
There have been thousands and will be thousands more genome mutations of this virus. Are we going shut down the country every single time another one appears?
The cure is rapidly becoming far far worse than the disease.

One very simple reason. The UK is the world leader in human genome sequence technology, with around 45% of the world's human sequence genomics capability located within the UK. That's whey we have found the new protein spike sequencing changes in the COVID variant now prevalent in the South East of England, even though it is likely to exist in other regions of the world, where it remains undetected and where spikes in infection therefore go unexplained.
We should all be enormously proud of our biotech and life sciences industries in the UK.

Well in excess of 3 million people in UK have had Covid, with 70,000 reported deaths, the cost will ultimately be close to £1 trillion in costs and losses to the economy.
When the bill starts to be paid in 2024 people will look back on the so called austerity years and think wow they never had it so good.
