Friends live in Swale district in Kent, top tier for weeks, local newspaper journalist asked as there are a number of jails on Isle of Sheppey is the infection rates there being used to define the whole area around.
Politely told of course because they in the Swale district, said Govt official went really quiet when it pointed out to him that "as whole point of prisons is to lock people up then how many prisoners including lifers were out wandering the streets of Swale on a daily basis". Journo stopping getting any responses to questions after that

A group of scientists advising the government on coronavirus has released the minutes of a meeting about the new virus variant on Friday, which led to Saturday’s announcement.

I have friends travelling on Monday and Tuesday but have to wait for the airline to canx - otherwise no insurance. Two friends due to visit elderly parents in MAD had their Covid tests at 15:00 yesterday and the announcement an hour later.
This new variant has, apparently, been emerging for some time but no word from the govt until - effectively - too late.

Neighbour travelled across to Ireland last weekend for work, he brought wife and kids, he figured Uk heading for a Christmas lockdown so hired a house for them all. Planned to come back Christmas eve if lockdown didn't happen but now extended until after New Year.
Give him credit though as all the Christmas presents are sitting in his garage, will open it in the morning so DHL can pick up all the gifts. As he only been to Ireland for work at 2-3 day stretches then he figures it will be magical and different.

Oh you complete cynic, surely you don't believe a Govt that has shown such competency in handling this pandemic would stoop so low................... hmm see you point there.

BBC reports:
They made no warning that something had changed. Even on 1st Dec they obviously knew that matters were changing rapidly. Last Wednesday in the House of Commons, Johnson said that Christmas was going ahead - yet he must have known of the developments of the previous 8 weeks and where the numbers were going.
As was pointed out in The Guardian today, Boris postpones making a decision until all of the options have foreclosed with the passage of time. Then he is left with one option and trumpets that as the best option.
In the UK, it was first identified in the middle of October from a sample taken in September.

The pattern is one of resisting taking the necessary steps at the time when they would have been most effective and then being compelled to implement them late and with more damaging effect.

According to the bmj there are already 4000 variants of this virus which would mean around 14 announcements a day. The paper about this variant was only signed off by scientists on Friday but was first spotted in September as just another mutation.

SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus, and mutations arise naturally as the virus replicates. Many thousands of mutations have already arisen, but only a very small minority are likely to be important and to change the virus in an appreciable way. COG-UK says that there are currently around 4000 mutations in the spike
