  1. Bring in an outsider (foreign or a consultant)
  2. Get them to do all the dirty work - like making people redundant.
  3. When he's done that - fire him and apologise to the workforce.
  4. Bring in another soft local to restore harmony.

Well Mr. Smith is COO at AC so if he has the smarts that go with those jobs he'll have some air-tight contract that will see him rosy whatever happens..
Execs mostly always cover their asses.
