They say that there is no such thing as a free lunch and Loganair being given all these ex BMIR aircraft to find work for put them in a bind. They had planned on a few ERJ's being transferred to them as the Saab's were phased out and instead ended up with a fleet that had not worked for their old partner company and which would not work at many of their established airports.
Developing profitable work for maybe a dozen extra ERJ's has been a struggle that will still be there when the lockdown is over.

So how about Loganair’s wealthy owners put their hand in their pockets to support their own business instead of the increasingly cash strapped taxpayer being asked to bail airlines out?

Why should Loganair be funded when they have private investors - The Bond family own it and they are still in the Times Rich List..... Saving PSO routes to the Islands only requires Twin Otters / Do228's / BN2's - plenty of them around on UK AOC's without the need to prop up an airline with tens of millions.... when it can be done with less than 10 million.

Loganair are not in the same basket as Flybe. They deserve more support, at least just for their lifeline routes to the islands. They can ground everything else until such time as it is appropriate to bring them back. The people on these islands are already facing reduced ferry services too so there needs to be some way of them retaining some essential air links to bring them what they need and take them to the mainland if needed.
I know you can't compare the two but for context, Flybe received less than £5 per person for the Newquay-London route. Full PSO lists here make for interesting reading: https://ec.europa.eu/transport/sites...tory_table.pdf

A PSO can actually be bad news at this time. The PSO covers the difference between the expected costs of running the service and the income. If your flight costs £2,000 to run and you have projected revenue of £1,800 then the PSO subsidy covers the difference of £200. If passenger numbers fall off a cliff, you still have the £2,000 running cost but revenue might drop (say) to £400. You still end up with the same £200 subsidy under the PSO but are now making a big loss to run a flight that you're legally obliged to run.
The Newquay-London PSO was really a mechanism to get the route freed up from £13 each way APD - which was the real benefit. A lot of UK routes would suddenly be viable if you lifted the burden of APD.

Interestingly, “It said these were worth a six-figure sum and it hoped more would follow after they end in mid-May.” Probably a much needed boost.

This is not a Loganair bash... I love them, but lets not get to excited when they write something in a newspaper..
Most airlines incl. Loganair are very active on social media showing how great they are and essential, and listen they do great work.
However, a few charters now is nice for cash flow as that has halted for most airlines but this just a plaster on a big wound, regional charter rates have declined and all airlines are bleeding.. Just take the reg of the AC and look at FR24... The ATRs are flying the BA routes, but the vast majority of the fleet is flying nothing..
Logan made pre tax 1M GBP profit on a 120M GBP turnover what is exeptional for a regional airline... but I am lighting candles for all small regional airlines.. and hope they make it as it would be a big loss..
