I’ve heard ABZ is doing OK but it’s the GLA route I’d have more questions over.

That said, I looked a couple of weeks back at Stornoway for a long weekend which was more money than I was expecting (£260 each!) and 6 seats on my dates had already been pre-booked.

Thats a hideous fare. I have Southampton to Guernsey in August for 58 pounds return including seat choice with FLyBe (Blue Island)

i also believe that ABZ-OSL has been dropped?

Why is it a hideous fare? It seems reasonable for a low volume route purchased at short notice. You're not comparing like with like - your Blue Island fare is months away.

These perceptions are an issue for LM - is £260 to fly from London to Stornoway (Stornoway!!) really a lot of money?

The JER fare are expensive ex BOU. Quick check for rest of may and June ex SOU shows plenty return fares just over 100 pounds. If people wish to pay the money that's fine, the joys of choice. I know what I do.

To be honest for me it’s not really somewhere I’ve looked at before and only considered it because the option is now there. I hadn’t appreciated what a horrendous journey it is by other options! In that context £260 is reasonable, but I’d say you have to be actively looking to go there. For a weekend away though I can’t justify it, £520 for two would more than pay for a couple of days in a European city all in. If it’s still around next year I would certainly use it for a proper holiday exploring the islands.

I think in context the normal bottom line figure going ex GLA or EDI to SYY is 150 return. Adding the feeder flight on separate tickets to either GLA or EDI even on bucket fare would make no difference and with 267 pounds as a through fare it would be a reasonable assumption unlikely to get much cheaper. Perhaps Barra Is another alternative if you fancy the western islands? Beach landing is a must do...

The quote was from GLA, less than half the distance comparing with London and so yes that would be 'perceived' as a disproportionate fare. I am not sure of the ins and outs of how much this route is subsidised for locals and perhaps there needs to be some reclamation to make it work. These are not late, last seat high fares, this was 4 months out (albeit Aug) with a wide open seat map.
What ever came of FR operating SYY? That would have put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Not if you're wanting to fly GLA - SYY at short notice, ie, not as a tourist. I was going to book three adult returns a fortnight ago to attend a family funeral. Two of us were pensioners so we were looking at the afternoon flight going up and a cheaper evening flight coming back a few days later. The total fare was about £950. We would have needed to hire a car on arrival as well.
A fourth adult was travelling from Inverness so we drove up to Inverness and over to Ullapool for the ferry. I had been in touch with the Ullapool office who said that they could only guarantee passage for the passengers but to be there a couple of hours early as the stand by queue was first come first served. We were fifth in the s/by queue and were asked to buy tickets that would be fully refundable if the car could not get on. There were spaces on the freight ferry that night and any cars left behind would be driven on and off by Calmac and we could collect the car the following morning at Stornoway when it suited us.
They managed to get the first six vehicles from the stand by queue on board and about four cars were left for the freighter.
We paid £190 for four adults and a car, return, at no-notice.

I remember FR looking at SYY back in the pre bank crash days. They wanted an upgrade to the ILS system which at that time was going to cost £20m or thereabouts.

And even more reasonable for the good folks of the Western Isles, and other remote Scottish locations, thanks to the generosity of the Scottish government who stump up 50% of the base fare for any resident travelling for leisure or social reasons, providing the route is not provided under a PSO.

So you can see why the fares appear a little on the cheeky side.

I must admit I was quite surprised at the prices on the ABZ-SEN route. I'm flying back from London in June and I got a £49.99 one way fare to ABZ, when the likes of BA/BE were charging in excess of £90 from LHR, so I'm trying out the LM service for the first time. Having looked more recently the fares do seem to have climbed a bit more, but are still cheaper than the much shorter ABZ-KOI flight that I've also looked at taking.

Well, airlines are not pricing like railyways in the steam engine era, i.e. a fixed amount for each mile traveled. It is all about competition and supply & demand on a route. ABZ-KOI has no competition by air and reasonable demand for the capacity offered. Quite unlike SEN-ABZ with lots of competition and most probably more supply than demand. So LM is pricing below costs to get a foot in the door. It should be obvious that selling tickets for an average fare of 50 GBP on a 50 seater plane is not sustainable even if all seats are taken. And reading that cars need to be trasnported by freight ship to Stornoway with no guarantee that they will make it there at all nicely demonstrates why an airline can charge a premium for flights.

Just for clarity, the ferry was the only competition available and they guaranteed only that the passengers would get across that day. That put us in the same position as flying, we would need to rent a car once across. Getting our car on with us was a big bonus, the freight ferry would not normally be available for cars left behind but it demonstrates that people can get support from the ferry company if they feel that it's a better deal.

G-SAJR has been running long-legged charters from ABZ to KIR for the last two days. A drilling operation is setting up there at around N 50deg 52min, W 013deg 20min. A Babcock S92 is shuttling the crews out. The ERJ spent 5hours 20mins on the ground at Kerry yesterday so I assume two shuttles were done. The chopper, G-VINT is invisible on FR24 at the moment so I can't verify.

G-RJXE has been on the ground for 6 days in SYY. Anyone know the reason for this?

Looked like it got sent up from GLA to collect the return passengers from an EDI flight (s34) that had some problems on landing. They later sent a S2000 over from ABZ to recover the passengers.
