There's one fundamental difference though. Wizz Air is profitable, Norwegian is not.

Norwegian carries with it high costs, and always has. Wizz Air on the contrary has amongst the lowest cost base of any carrier in Europe and drives it's sales on volume. They are far better placed to justify the rate of expansion that Norwegian could not during the last decade.

Maybe, but that's too simplistic a view to take. You have to look at the longer-term returns.

Wizz has plentiful cash that should see them through the current climate in a relatively healthy state. Unfortunetaly the same cannot be said for all that many others at the moment.

They do bet on it but I am not sure this will be the case if pandemics doesn't go away soon. They are burning cash much faster than Ryanair and won't have the same state support as legacy carriers.

Unless you’re a management accountant for both Ryanair and wizzair you have no idea how much cash either of them are burning! Maybe you don’t like wizz - I’ve never actually flown with them so don’t have an opinion either way, but as an aviation professional who’s livelihood depends on this business I’m delighted to see any airline emerging from this pandemic with a positive growth oriented outlook as that is good for everyone

I doubt any passenger airline has made money in the last 6 months and the remainder of this year Will continue to be challenging I am sure, but for those airlines or airline groups who have cash reserves the future will be positive and I for one am sure wizz are the new airline to watch as they have don’t a remarkable job so far

im just struggling to see where all this negativity towards them has come from, unless you had the unfortunate experience of a grumpy cabin crew member (and EVERY airline has a ew of them) or they turned you down for a job?! Lol

Interesting but for an LCC diversification & any loss of focus & over reach never a good idea.

But if the operation is backed by Hungarian Gov and if gives crews experiance if LH sectors then it is investment for when the 321LRs arrive.
Wizzair are very clever cookies so I would have thought it would have been well thought through. With a foot in ME now then perhaps they might been looking at a stand alone Freight ops, there is money to be made their currently.
Even BA would like to have their old dedicated Cargo arm at the moment!

Chuckles....Perhaps a slightly disingenuous although true statement as far as the posting went but...

The fuller & more complete picture for all is the A330F already registered HA-LPA ex QTR will be used for ops on behalf of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade.

If any other scenario then perhaps advise your broker to sell WZZ and buy RYR or even EZY.

"Money to be made currently"...

Lets face it WZZ could probably make money with a couple of pretty (ooops sexist) cabin crew flogging Goulash down Luton Market on a Saturday lunchtime but would they really want to?

Let me just check the fleets of three of the World`s most successful LCC`s perhaps Southwest...Ryanair & easy....Nope no A330F`s or freighters in their fleets...I wonder why.

If the aircraft is being operated for the Hungarian Govt to have strategic cargo capacity, then there were only 2 possible candidates - Hungarian Air Force or Wizz. There will be plenty of ways to argue something is in the national security interest and avoid putting it out to the cheapest bidder in the EU. If Ryanair had monopoly pricing power for air freight to Ireland, they would also be looking at an A330F

WZZ ops per se into any country worldwide I guess would not raise eyebrows or call any attention but Hungarian Air Force perhaps may...With another acknowledged pun...hiding in plain sight.

Perhaps just a Government way around enroute & paperwork exercises.

The term "Stick to your knitting" is the one that comes to mind here.

Airline industry is littered with tales of Airline bosses deciding because "we fly passengers" then we can easily diversify into something else, like freight / holidays / food service / etc etc.. Amazing how many times the end result is something different from the one planned and the accountants end up writing a bit fat check.

Appreciate that point of view but there are also many examples of airlines that have done that successfully. I can’t think of a LCC that has but why not be a pioneer as long as you are aware of the risks......it could prove to be another valuable income stream esp in the current climate when pax travel is looking so uncertain.

Memo to self...Put that broker back on speed dial !...

Income stream...How many dedicated cargo carriers have come & gone over the decades? Many with huge expertise within their own market...CARGO.

How many cargo carriers thought they could do it the other way & diversify into pax ops... Yes there were several naming them would be difficult but tellingly where are they now?

Worryingly for WZZ (or their shareholders) the initial ops as suggested could perhaps signify then Officialdom & Government meddling.

Be more convinced though when Southwest begin A330F ops outa Sky Harbor or LAX.

Are we getting ahead of ourselves here - is this anything more than a bit of contract flying for the Hungarian Govt.?

Catania will be a new base (their 36th) with new domestic destination Rome, Bologna, Venice as well as Memmingen and London. Milan to Bari and Liverpool to Chisinau and Cluj are also new routes.

Interview with Wizz Air boss - optimistic

https://www.focus.de/finanzen/boerse..._12471813.html

"Für ein eigenes Unternehmen erwartet Váradi hingegen eine schnelle Erholung. „Wir werden wahrscheinlich schon 2021 unser bisheriges Rekordjahr 2019 übertreffen“, erklärte. Auch die weiteren Aussichten seien gut „Der Sprung von derzeit gut 130 auf 200 Flugzeuge im Jahr 2025 sollte uns locker gelingen."

Varadi forecasts that 2021 will beat the previous record of 2019 for his company and that he expects to expand to 200 aircraft by 2025, from current 130
