You tend to find that countries have very similar requirements for each other. If you look around slightly more widely you also tend to find that you can see whose "fault" it is. The results of that wider look around would be that in terms of paperwork we tend to be quite welcoming of tourists but quite suspicious of other people, and that in admin terms we tend to be a slight bit of a pain. A wider look also shows that Russia always tends to be a pain in every way possible...

Wizzair is dropping 15 routes from KTW after 15 September: Alghero,Athens,Bari,Bologna,Bourgas,Catania,Castellon,Glasgo w,Lisbon, Malaga,Naples,Porto,Santander,Split...That's some serious chopping!..I suspect some of these will return as seasonal but we will have to wait till the S20 is released to find out which ones...FR expanding the KTW base isn't exactly helping things...

St Petersburg actually has a unique visa waiver scheme if you book as part of an organised tour that doesn’t leave the city (and also if you arrive by tourist boat) but organised tours are generally low-yield.

Yep, and that’s exactly why EasyJet and bmi both tried and failed in the past. The visa was far more than the entry-price ticket so the only way to make money on Moscow is to operate a business frequency service and charge accordingly.

How can a route be "dropped" if it was only announced this week (Santander) as one to be operated until 15SEP? Some of the others (Alghero, Split, Malaga, Burgas) are known to be seasonal.

Not all seasonal routes end on Sept 15..Most used to end mid-to-late October with the end of the summer timetable..And not all were meant to be seasonal

Russia had free Visa's last year for anybody with a football ticket to World Cup. Minimum ticket price was $100. Visa supposed to last 6 weeks but they extended it to 31st Dec when they saw its impact.

On Wizzair today and they told me that Poznan and Katowice (but unsure whether it was Krakow) were closing as bases. They will be served from Luton. Not entirely convinced crew member got it right.

The crew member certainly got it wrong or maybe you mis-heard. The Poznan base has already closed, but the destination will continue to be served by away based aircraft and those operating on a W-pattern like the Doncaster service. Incidentally, this is currently operated by the Katowice based aircraft.

Katowice is one of Wizzairs largest bases with recent expansion and new routes. The Krakow base was launched as a reaction to keep a foothold on the recent Ryanair expansion there for sure.

I think she got it wrong to be fair, Katowwice is losing a lot of routes and Krakow growing. It was a London based aircraft with Luton based staff so a bit out of the knowledge from Polish bases.

Are there any news regarding Wizz Air Ukraine?
According to a Ukrainian news article they have postponed the decision regarding the launch of Wizz Air UA due to the elections (2nd/final round has already taken place on April 21 though) and they are contemplating to set up a base in Lviv according to "Portal Lviv" but there is still no indication when a final decision will take place. Meanwhile Ryanair is expanding massively in Ukraine and I hope that Wizz Air won't leave that unanswered.

Furthermore I'm surprised that not a single new route has been announced in April, as opposed to numerous ones in the previous months. Could this be related to a mere growth of 10 aircraft in the next fiscal year (see quarterly report of Wizz Air)? Given that they haven't even applied for the Nis route tender I suppose they're severely lacking new aircraft for the upcoming 12 months despite their large order.

I expect Level to pull out of VIE anytime soon with EW to focus on German/Swiss destinations out of VIE and leave the European ones to the others..
Wizz, Lauda and EZY are way to strong now at VIE.

New longer range A321XLR coming to Wizzair!

Interesting news today, with regards to an order for the newly launched A321XLR...
Forbes - Airbus' New A321XLR Plane Gets Big Boost From Indigo Partners

One of Wizzair's major shareholders, Indigo Partners (who also has major stakes in JetSmart and Frontier Airlines), placed an order for 50 of this new longer range aircraft today. 18 were converted from an existing A321neo order and a further 32 are new additional aircraft.

Of these 50 aircraft, 20 are going to Wizzair, 18 to Frontier and 12 to Jetsmart!

It will be interesting to see how Wizzair are looking to utilise these new longer range aircraft? Even though the new A321neo's that have now started to arrive do have the range to fly routes like London-Luton to New York, they have previously made it clear they have no interest in launching such routes or similar routes of this length!

Is this now a change in strategy for the airline, and looking to go into operating routes of 7+ hours? It would seem a bit of a waste of an aircraft to operate this type if they were not planning to do so. In the Airbus marketing material it states routes like New York to Rome and Miami to London are capable with the aircraft, not sure how this compares to routes from their central European bases like Warsaw or Budapest to New York or other US destinations.

Wizz Air are very much a bare bones ultra low cost carrier, so if they are going to operate longer routes, I hope they install some additional creature comforts! Their existing slimline seats make your bum go numb after few hours and anything longer than that is a struggle with their tight leg room and dense configuration! 230 passengers packed into one of these aircraft for 7+ hours will not be a lot of fun.
