Thanks - looks like the E9 on the CAA website refers to EVE. I understand that it's a Spanish charter that usually flies to Cuba and other far-away destinations.

In Ryanair / Wizzair case they provide something that the customer wants with lots of flexibility but also a willingness to cull routes quickly that are not working. Neither are always cheap but any addons (transportation to city / accomm etc) are paid by customer direct to the provider where Airline is only acting as the introducor. Ryanair looked at every single activity and asked the simple questions, Can we avoid doing it ? Can we charge for it ? Can we make it more steamlined ?

TC had hundreds of shops with Rent / Rates / Utilities / Staff / Computers / Furniture etc etc so basically before they make a single penny on a holiday they would need to be able to pay for I reckon £3-400k cost minimum in every one of those shops. In an era where 90% of people have home computers / tablets / smart phones it is outdated.

In relation to Poundland / Primark, people always looking for cheaper and happy to buy something that costs next to nothing in one of these shops even knowing they are made by people paid just above slave labour wages around the world.

Likely I already have and likely I will again.

Insurance companies assess the risk even bigger than anything I would have said and bearing in mind the Germanwings Fl9525 and MH370 the risk is one they would rather avoid. Don't confuse it as being a personal slight on them as in all likelihood I will be flown by pilots in the future who are ex TC, the pragmatic approach is to avoid the personal stuff in a bad situation.

Pretty much all airlines will do it for crew members of another airline that folds if they can. There won't be an "official" policy because there cannot be but where space available they will do what they can. Aircrew you help may be a colleague in a month or two.

Old neighbour was a FO, stranded in Spain when airline went, Easyjet looked after him, well aircrew did as they had no guidance, Captain decided he was taking him and some of the cabin crew, Ryanair took others into Stansted. He joined Easyjet couple of months after. He flew as FO with the guy who brought him back and said Captain got queried as to number of NonRev passengers and put on report at base by jonny jobsworth. Report went to next level a senior pilot just scrawled "Well done that guy, great call, credit to us, pass on my personal congrats on doing the right thing" and sent it back.

Don’t underestimate the new VS/Connect combo. This didn’t exist when Monarch folded. VS is also in a much better place from an equity point of view with much bigger backers if push came to shove. Of course they probably wouldn’t be willing to pay over the odds on the slots, but BA and U2 won’t get them on the cheap.

At least some of the above are now showing on FR24, so probably worth another check. Ignore any status of "Canceled" [sic] if you see a blue playback button next to the flight.

The MH A380 doing some rotations ex-GLA, so its A380 capable status has been useful. Interesting just as the EK A380 season comes to a close in a few weeks.

I read somewhere that the government were footing the bill for getting Thomas Cook customers back home. However I am aware that when bookings were made and a ATOL certificate was issued, there was a small charge made for this. Where did that money go, does anybody know?

Funding and administration

ATOL is run by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). It is able to provide assistance by requiring ATOL holders to pay a fee of £2.50 for each traveller, which is held in a fund managed by the Air Travel Trust. This fund is used to refund, repatriate or reimburse travellers for the cost of repaying for the affected parts of their trip.

This money creates a fund that will support consumers to minimise disruption to their holiday or, if they are no longer able to travel, provide a full refund for the holiday.

Grahamy, thank you for your reply. There are all kinds of cost's being given to repatriate travellers, then there is the unknown cost of refunds. Would there be sufficient money in the ATOL pot to cover all of this or would indeed the government have to dig in to tax payers pockets?
