If MAG can increase some charges to help them recover and not make staff redundant then why not.
Fine. I’ll humbly agree if this measure saves a single person from redundancy. But if that’s the reason, when demand soars one day and there is a huge recruitment drive at the airport - which we all want - then it would be nice to believe that charge will be reduced. We will see.

To be fair my opinion is jaundiced by my age. It only seems like yesterday when you were able to pull up outside the shiny new terminal, help your passengers inside and find the check in desk. Farewell hugs all round then pick up a paper and a Mars bar at WH Smith’s before jumping back in the car with an apologetic wave to the security guard before heading home on a deserted motorway.

And if you’re wondering, that’s no sentimental BS - that is exactly as it was.

Maybe back in 1991.

I agree that’s what it was. But times have changed dramatically since then. It’s not really only Stansted that’s changed all the major UK airports have.

Why stop at £7. Better to charge a straight tenner or even more. It will be that charge anyway in a year or two. Eventually the free car park drop off will end if it becomes too popular.

When the passengers return will we see a drop in the charges back to previous levels? Nope.

These new charges will not save a single job. MAG is not a charity, they are here to make money or in today’s world reduce their loses. All companies will reduce staff costs as much as possible.

Option B is to charge the airlines more to use Stansted. The charges can be hidden in the airfares to stop the people moaning. A passenger fee of around £3 per head will raise the same income.

Sat 1

When using the airport recently (departing 22nd October, arriving 31st October. Sat 1 was closed to passengers on both occasions with signs in place at the transit station at sat 1 saying not to get off. I thought it was a bit odd that it was shut off to passengers rather than sat 2 and there was no sign of any building work going on. Haven’t heard of any reason why, apart from the obvious lack of demand for all 3 of the satellites.

Sat 2 offers more flexibility in regards to inbound/outbound domestic/international splits, can be walked to via domestics if required (so TTS could be turned off if required) also then allows for cargo aircraft to park on the Alphas next to sat 1 as well.

I may be completely wrong here, but out of the 3 satellites, isn't satellite 2 (international at least) normally the least busiest of all 3? I thought only FR used it.

Satellite 1

With EasyJet gone (apart from a reduced Amsterdam) it makes total sense to close down Satellite 1 for the foreseeable. Jet2 and all others that historically used Sat 1 can be accommodated remotely or via Satellite 2. Domestics can also depart as per usual Satellite 2. Ryanair standard Satellite 3. I’m not really sure that there’s a need to even run the transit system at this time, I’m surprised that they are.

SAT1 was closed initially when we went into the first lockdown. The TTS was totally switched off then as well so all passengers walked to SAT2 and all arriving internationally passengers where buses to immigration.

SAT1 and TTS reopened for the summer and SAT1 closed in early September. The TTS still is running to SAT2 for international flights.

SAT3 was also originally closed in the first lockdown and reopened for the summer. SAT3 is still open now.
There was talk that the talk that the TTS would be switched off early winter as their wasn’t demand to be running it to SAT2. So if this happened all SAT2 flights would require passengers to walk there.

Both my departing and arriving transit journeys were busy especially arriving back it was no different to being on the tube at rush hour!

So all sat 1 airlines have now been temporarily moved to sat 2? Are the jet bridges there being used? FR never uses them, but I have seen Jet2, Pegasus et al. use them on Sat 1, so wonder if they might use the ones on sat 2 that haven't been used in years

No bridges were in use on either occasion I was there (was flying with Jet2), had to use stairs in very heavy rain when arriving.

Jet2 and Pegasus only occasionally used bridges in SAT1 often when they had a flight heavy with wheelchair passengers.
Only 4 out of 8 air bridges are ever used in n SAT2 these are the ones linked to stands. B32, B33, C43 and C44. These all have links to the upstairs (International) gate area. The 4 bridges linked to the downstairs (Domestic) gates are all decommissioned and haven’t been used in years.

Pegasus only use Jet Bridges for 2 reasons .
1) Inclement Weather.
2) Not enough Swissport staff on duty to procure 2 sets of steps (becoming more common) .

With the transit not running, is the upstairs lounge area at Sat 2 accessible or only are they only using the downstairs domestic gates?
(which can of course be used for Intl Deps)
