As you say rog747, this whole operation looks doomed. Still no social media updates since before Xmas and not a word on the airline operator that is supposed to run the summer program. An airline announcement was due to be made in Sep/Oct last year and how they think they are going to fill seats on 8 destinations god only knows. I can foresee only the Skiathos route coming back and that's it. This is Powdair all over again!
In my opinion they're best off just doing Skiathos again, improve the loads and build up customer confidence, then they can look at a bigger operation for 2020.

Heard the runway will be a 20m extension with 150m starter strip also added. How will this effect the physical dimensions for field performance ie the runway will not be of 6211ft in length!? Cheers

The runway extentsion my bring the total length to 6211,but it's the declared distances that matter. As I understand explained in detail in past posts by TCAS FAN,the TODA for 20 will be 1799 mtrs and the LDA 1650 mtrs. You have to take into account the restricted width of the runway. However the figures are very similar to Southend who have a vibrant Easy 320 operation.Given runway drainage and groving improvements hopefully to be made, then SOU could have a promising future.
SOU-GVA next info 1115 -
I wonder what they will do - Hang around at STN until the fog clears?
Am sitting here near BOH and the low vis is clearing a wee bit - Its just near the deck - should clear by 10ish

Pax being bussed down from STN from the diverted GVA so SOU Twitter says...
The A320 seems to be flying down empty in the direction to SOU to pick up the GVA pax
ATD STN 1049
Cannot understand why not bring the pax with you>?

I cannot imagine why any airline would do that unless they had no idea when the fog would lift and didn't want to keep the passengers waiting at STN with no information. It can't be cheap offloading diverted pax at STN and then paying several coach companies to bus pax down to SOU. That's why pax are usually kept on board until weather improves.

I am sure the Pilot or Ops did think about that first and foremost
BOH had 200 m freezing fog , its quite possible that the aircraft may have not been CAT111 equipped or it was unserviceable , the pilots may have not been checked out to CAT 111 standard
In fact all sorts of reasons that we are not aware of

Actually - why on earth wasn't it diverted to BOH!?

Odd indeed that the pax were not flown down. We all heard about people sitting on planes at LGW for hours and hours when that drone was around. It would be interesting to know if there is anything SOU can do to help ease the fog problem, it does seem to suffer from it often. Whilst its limitations are well known, and ILS is now seemingly a retrograde step, there must be technology around or in development to counteract these issues (or at least ease them). I know they not to long ago installed some apparatus that measures the visibility, to replace a man on a step ladder deciding (apparently this actually happened until recently!), and there was a noticeable improvement in operations during fog. However, lately SOU has gone back to being closed for most of the morning. The landing lights probably have not been changed since the airport opened.

There's a fair chance that they were sat there with a forecast improvement, but with no change in the actuals, then no change, then no change and then as soon as you get the pax off the a/c, weather starts improving....
Fly lolo states we are finalising the airline, it will be on an Embrarer 190 and the airline is EU, the Flybe takeover has complicated things, but the flights will be on Friday and Tuesday and sales are going well.
Well that's all good...
As for the fog yesterday - it was forecast to be clear as a bell between 10 and 11am - which is was, and will be today...
The EZY GVA did quite a few circuits in the hold, before popping off to STN landing around 0900
The A320 then came down empty departing STN at 1045 - I doubt the diverted pax were barely on the M25 by that time.
Guess they left GVA on time with the view they may get in before the fog dropped on...hey ho

Recent days of fog have really shown up SOU limitations with its ILS, even with 750 RVR there was no approaches!Surely with this in mind any future operator will be thinking long and hard about SOU fog record, diversions are costly !
