You can say that again, it will probably be daylight by the time they get back from Cardiff and Birmingham. Some diversions! It really doesn't work very well as an airport this place does it? Still, its only the year 2018..........

What i think is more impressive, is the elapsed flight times of these services. Some of them touching 3+ hours. At least Flybe have tried to get passengers to where they should be. Its going to be a busy night and morning in operations !

Following on from recent fog diversions ,this morning KLM flight diverts to BOU and this is with RVR above 1400mtrs,with a broken 200ft cloud base!
There can't be many regional airports with such poor minimas, it begs the question is the airport fit for purpose in poor weather operations?

This does not appear to be a simple weather diversion. ILS RVR minima for an approach to RWY 20 normally around RVR 800. Can anyone throw any light on this, such as aerodrome navaid/lighting failure or aircraft tech problem (hydraulics) requiring longer runway for landing?

It made numerous circuits and go-arounds. During the same period Flybe's Q400s were of course still taking off but arrivals being delayed.

Foggy future?

Any LCC seriously thinking of SOU surely will be thinking, is it worth the risk? It’s lucky to have BOH down the road, as least There a possibility that if it continues expansion it will be open longer to take what seems Like a large no. of Diverts. Surely any benefit of SOU transport links is hugely outweighed by the Unknown’s of landing probability not to mention curfews. Maybe with a 45/45 shuttle bus from
BOH to Southampton Central and a 30/10 to
Christchurch station would provide a more stable environment. In all seriousness Just imagine x3 full EZ 320’s we’re circling and got fogged away? Really doesn’t bare thinking about - let’s be honest .. would be utter chaos for a LCC.

Have you ever thought that navaids/lighting may just be part of the expansion plans. It really isn’t inconceivable!

Maybe this is partly the reason why KLM are planning to pull out of SOU??

Looking at the FR24 recording for KL915 this morning the aircraft entered the SOU hold at 0832 and commenced an approach a few minutes later. At 0840 it carried out a go around from (as indicated on FR24) a low height and then made another approach and went around again at 0851, again from a similar height. It made a third attempt with another go around at 0911, having descended to a low height once more, and commenced a diversion to BOH at 0913. That sequence of three approaches over a short time would suggest that they anticipated having the required visual reference for landing each time. The third go around made it inevitable that they would have to divert. It would certainly be interesting to know why none of the three attempts were successful but I don't suppose we ever shall. FR24 is not infallible of course but is usually pretty accurate in these circumstances as far as heights are concerned.

Surely there is very little that can be done to improve nav aids at SOU?
TCAS FAN confirms the RVR minima for 20 as 800 MTRS?,if so this is well above other Cat 1 ILS minima at other airports, which I believe is 550 MTRS. As quoted by others its seems unlikely that this would be acceptable to LCC operations given down the road is a Cat 3 airfield called Bournemouth!

this was indeed a very simple diversion. Pilot did not see the approach lights when he reached his decision height. Nothing to do with fog or aircraft, just a very low cloudbase below the pilot’s minima.

Exactly that, some seem to think that a 170m extension/start up alone is gonna open the flood gates to EZY/LCC ops!!! If the main reason why EZY didn't open a base a BOH years ago, was the size and capacity of the then new arrrivals terminal (drastically downsized from the original plans to save money) then I think factors like curfew and weather conditions aren't going to look too attractive to a LCC from SOU.

It was covered at the time. Pax loads are good but not enough people are transferring at AMS onto KLM long haul. Most are using it as a point to point SOU-AMS service. KLM want routes like that to provide long haul feed.

SOU being closer to LHR and LGW than KL's other regional destinations has probably not helped.
