It's an inconvenience for pax. They will return to their jobs, way of life and it will be just a nine day wonder for them.

My concerns and thoughts are for the staff, pilots, cabin crew and ground crew. My son's best friend is/was a SFO. he's gutted

No, for the media, especially the taxpayer-funded Beeb, the issue is inconvenienced pax and lost holidays. Those are not tragedies, lost jobs are.
To be fair, when I listened to R5 Live at 5.30 this morning, Simon Calder provided an alternative perspective. He thought the people who are currently overseas will not be greatly inconvenienced as alternative flights home are being arranged and the real 'inconvenience' is the situation the Monarch employees now find themselves in.

Who benefits from the collapse

How about running the companies in Administration until the following is sorted:
Ensure no money is filtered out of any of the companies bank accounts.
Flying all passengers back within the short-term at Monarchs expense.
Refund all those eligible at Monarchs expense
Ensure ALL employees get paid, including notice period.
Protect employees Pension rights.


The total bill is picked up by the so-called turn-around specialist running the show and backed by their CAA / ATOL protection.

I remember British Air Ferries operating during administration and coming out successfully the other side. But that was a long while ago and no doubt the rules have changed since then?

I agree. I get a little fed up with the media in general concentrating on interviewing families who have had their holidays cancelled.
The BBC even had one woman in their studio this morning. Strewth !!

The ache of just losing a colleague was giving way to fond memories and ghost stories. That gut wrenching ache is back this morning with the news of Monarch's demise. Memories are now flooding back of the terror that faced me and my colleagues at the realisation that for the approaching pay day , there will be no pay.


Unlike my experience, this time, there are tons of jobs out there. Anyone of them better than lining up on the dole queue , begging the bank for some breathing space, placing the "For Sale" sign up, outside your house, explaining to kids why they will now go to the local comprehensive; yeah, yeah, yeah. Awful.


So, do that, Monarch pilots. Go and enjoy the hustle for jobs and keep putting food on the table. It will not take long to re-establish yourselves. It will take a mighty re-set of the mindset and a willingness to wipe the board clean and start again. You will, and you will be more successful.


Ciao, fond memories of one of the great airlines in the industry.

Many, many pilots from BA are ex-Ryanair, and I certainly know a couple who have only recently gone from FR to Monarch, so I suspect there are a fair few who would have 737 ratings.

For all their current woes, FR Captains in the UK are earning £115k gross, so it's not the end of the world to join them and it certainly pays the mortgage.

Yes. I was in Air Europe, 6 March 1991. I think this time better as such a looming pilot shortage. I was on the dole 9 months.
Pathetic the news concentration on poor holidaymakers who will be sorted by our amazingly proactive govt. this time.
Best advice for the guys is not to sit in shock but get straight out there. Cathay Pacific may be interested and anyone with Canadian connections, AC about to hire 450.
Hong Kong Airlines going to be bigger than CX in 5 years I hear and desperate for the kind of experience these Monarch guys have. That would be the number one target for me. Forget about any bull**** regarding cost of living etc. A jobs a job and HK exciting. Anyone without family issues should def apply there. CX losing young guys to them already.

Also I imagine the majority of the fleet due to its age will become scrap metal? Though I'm guessing this is up to the aircraft lessors?

Really sorry this has come to pass. Best wishes to the Monarch pilots. Others have said that there are lots of jobs out there; certainly enough to avoid having to work for Ryanair. After all, the dreadful Ts & Cs at that awful company leading the race to the bottom have played their part in the demise of a much better quality airline.

Yes they also had a few newish aircraft as well such as the later registered A321's. I guess we'll see what happens.

A very sad day for aviation - thoughts are with fellow aviators and staff. Thankfully the market is buoyant so remain hopeful and optimistic - there are a few decent airlines left out there so hopefully you can avoid joining the Irish pig slurry of an airline...
