Yesterdays flight cancelled due to aircraft fault
Thanks GrahamK. Suspected it might be. Still, I wonder just when the a/c went tech yesterday and whether they were able to disperse some of the pax, either on our IAD or via DUB or even via a European airport. If say the premium pax were accommodated on other flights yesterday, it's encouraging if the extra flight today was as busy as it looked.

Mind you, I gather all the flights to the US have been very busy recently (and not just from MAN).

MANFOD..

re your comment

"I gather all the flights to the US have been very busy recently (and not just from MAN)".

So they should be.. it is one of the peak times of year for flights to the states.

Nigel, I appreciate that flights should be busy in August but my impression is that this month has been noticeably busier than July, at least on certain routes. The CAA stats in due course will tell us whether that's true.

Edit: Hi Nigel. I should have checked last year's figures for July and August before posting, which showed Aug. performance in terms of LFs was appreciably better than July for MAN.

AA to ORD: (July'14 was 72%) Aug'14 was 81%

AA to JFK (July'14 was 79%) Aug'14 was 90%

UA to EWR (July'14 was 87%) Aug'14 was 96%

UA to IAD (July'14 was 75%) Aug'14 was 90%

In July this year, with all the extra capacity to JFK by TCX 3 x weekly, the new DL flight and larger AA a/c, I reckoned the LF overall was 76.4%. (on just under 32,000 seats available)

ORD worked out at 85.1% (well up on last year); EWR and IAD both 80%

Ultimately it's all about yield, premium seats sold, not forgetting freight etc. and LAX's comments above referred to the situation on VS to ATL where yield is allegedly up despite the fall in LF on the larger VS a/c compared to DL.

Clutching at straws or looking for a row while it is Europen Im sure many people both sides of the Irish Sea wouldn't really refer to UK or Irish airports as European airports as they are not on mainland Europe.

Anyway in my experience United dont really re route passengers if they know the aircraft will be repaired by next morning. They may allow some J passengers who request but nothing major. It would happen if departures ex US were cancelled.

Thanks for all info.

So if VS can fill a decent number of those premium seats, and I imagine that was a factor in the decision to switch to VS, then it should certainly help yield, although I've no idea what the situation is on cost bases.
Virgin, like Laker before them, do not pay cabin crew....well. Freddie Laker once said they were ten a penny and easily replaceable, unlike pilots. Their US counterparts are more "senior" so if they swap a DL operated B763 for a VS operated A333, their is a good cost saving so long as you can still fill the seats.

Whilst VS cabin crew aren't particularly well paid, I don't see the difference in pay between themselves and their DL counterparts being a game changer in terms of the economics. Despite U.S cabin crew operating Internationaly do tend to be more senior, the difference in pay isn't that drastic.

Flybe add a 2nd daily Mon-Fri service to Hannover from Oct 25th and Southampton goes from 4 to 5 daily in addition to the already known increases on Amsterdam, Paris and Düsseldorf.

Also, the Lufthansa Cargo LAX times are 2100 on Mondays, departs 0225 Tuesday's. B77F LH8231. Makes LH cargo 4 weekly ex MAN.

Interesting to see that it should go daily with a A350

I think the article is slightly off now. Last I heard the plan was for other routes to get the A350 first, MAN gets the B77W off those routes to go daily, then, an eventual 2nd daily on the A350.

There are apparently now several routes ahead of us to get the A350, in no order they were Auckland, Barcelona, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Boston and Amsterdam amongst others.

unless you're a spotter then going daily on 773 instead of A350 is good news as it's more seats. Wonder if they go double daily if that would see 2x A350 to lessen the jump up in capacity.

Long way off yet I guess though.

Aside from the pax success of the re-introduced Cathay service, hows the cargo doing? Considering CX dropped their dedicated freighters some time ago- wonder if they are recovering some of their freight traffic. I'm sure Spanners@CX can tell us.

One wonders whether Cathay lost any freight ex MAN during the period they had no flights. With freight, you always have the opportunity to re-route it to flights where you have spare capacity, so taking it to LHR and elsewhere was no doubt the norm. However with a direct service, things become a little quicker again and of course freight generates an important source of revenue to aid the flight's economics.

Many trucks ply to and from MAN's freight village every day with freight that is actually flying into or out of somewhere else.

Cool

Freight is good, Manchester holds the system wide record for freight carried on a 777-300ER. The only reason you need a dedicated freighter today would be for oversized cargo, which is trucked down south!

Airline and tourism prospects for China's outbound market remain strong despite yuan depreciation | CAPA - Centre for Aviation

Not related to Manchester but interesting nonetheless in terms of the opportunities.

Let's hope MAG are still agitating.

Don't be silly! This is Britain where it is assumed that everyone speaks english, and reads english text, wherever they originate from!

Are there any signs in European languages, e.g. French or Spanish (The Germans and Dutch really usually do speak english!)
