As for wanting the land for development, that would be a very long term game, and anyone interested would know there are cheaper options to the south and east of the airport.
May 2016 Provisional Stats
The May 2016 CAA provisional statistics show a total of 77,952 passengers (down 5% on 2015). The Flybe/Stobart Air routes all showed increases with CFR up 18%, RNS up 21% and GRQ up 2%.
Yes that's correct. It looks like EZY carried 2% fewer pax on its SEN routes than in May 2015.
While looking for those figures I noticed that the SEN to Berne service carried 996 pax last May while the replacement LCY route carried 684 pax in May 2016.

I could be mistaken but I believe easyjet chose to cancel some flights around then because of French ATC industrial action. I know Stobart managed to operate to both French destinations during that period without too many problems.
Throughout the summer, apart from Paris and possibly Jersey, easyjet appear to have frequently sold out, and when a seat was available you could expect to pay over £300 one way to Spain or Portugal and even over £150 to AMS. A friend, who lives a couple of miles from the airport told me was a bit p'eed off because he had to travel with his wife and kids to STN or pay easyjet close to double for 4 return tickets from Southend to Malaga.
As for the Flybe/Sobart figures, lets hope that growth proves consistent. Very positive news I think.

Some of the EZY reduction could also be down to half term which I think went further into June compared to 2015.
Cancellations from the strikes also affected some sun routes I believe, not just Paris.

Talks aimed at attracting new airlines to Southend airport are “progressing well,” owner Stobart Group disclosed today.
The company has a target to grow passenger numbers at the Essex airport to more than 2.5 million a year by 2018, delivering earnings [EBITDA] of £8 per passenger.
In a pre-close trading statement ahead of half year results due to be issued on October 27, the firm said like-for-like passenger numbers for the six months to August 31 were “broadly in line” with the same period last year, with on-time performance and load factors continuing to out-perform airline targets.
“As reported in the AGM statement in June, London Southend airport's management team is in advanced talks with a number of low-cost carriers and full service operators, who want to take advantage of the airport's access to London capacity at peak times. These talks are progressing well,” Stobart said.
Chief executive Andrew Tinkler said: “We are pleased with how the discussions with carriers and operators are progressing and look forward to a positive outcome in the coming period.”

It's become rather a familiar refrain that airline negotiations are on the threshold of being successfully completed so I wouldn't hold your breath. I would say though that this Trading Statement will have been cleared by Stobart's legal department so use of the phrase "These talks are progressing well" probably has some substance. Otherwise they may have said something more modest such as "These talks are continuing" or just "These talks are progressing".

The waiting game is always frustrating for us noblemen, but must be more frustrating for the management team. Shareholders must be kept happy with sometimes exaggerated news releases. However, it seems we must wait until 2018 to see what EZY plans are for SEN. Stobart Air has reasonable support for their 3 destinations (or is it FlyBe we must thank? I get confused), and hope they might find another 3 new destinations in the future, perhaps in conjunction with CityJet, who's LCY operation comes to a standstill from lunchtime Saturday till lunchtime Sunday, and frequently have to operate into SEN if running very late anyway (I think Florence is one). As several of us have already said, we believe Malta would be well supported, plus new Spanish mainland destinations as tourism looks for safer places to visit. I also think that a great loss has been the maintenance organisations who always seemed so busy when I visited with airliners parked everywhere. Big empty hangars/workshops certainly must affect the bottom line of profits badly, so I hope management is also doing something about that too.
