No commercial airport wants a "spare" runway unless they REALLY need one. GLA, BHX and LHR have all closed runways deemed to be unnecessary. The cross runway at EDI is space for much needed parking, be honest. Using it requires a faff of coordination with Scottish Control so might as well taxi 90 seconds longer, use the main and allow some much needed stand building.
The runway in question was the hated original which wasn't aligned into the prevailing wind and saw EDI lose days of traffic at a time due to winter crosswinds, something PIK with the same runway alignment still suffers.

The cross runway is land they already own and can build on quickly so from a money stand point makes sense. The main runway isn't shut very often due to any issues such as burst tyres and even if it was it would probably take at least an hour to tow away the aircraft parked on the cross runway and take down the lighting stands etc.

The plan appears to be to create 20 new stands on the site of the current long-term car park and the former GAT by relocating the long-term car park to Block 33 (threshold of Runway 30). This will cause a reduction of five stands at block 33 so the project will, I think, have a net 15 additional stands.

What is the catastrophic event between 2045 and 2050 that see's passenger forecast shrink from 29.9m back to 3m!! A typo like that in a published master plan.....really!!

It must be the day the intern drops in, because EDI finally posted their own press release, re April traffic, to their own website. Only 8 days late.

They still haven't updated their New Routes page which has routes which are no longer new,or,in one case, have since been discontinued.

Conde Neste reporting that some of the Norwegian transatlantic bargain base fares still not all been taken up (after the $65 launch fares sold out) and for peak July.
Looks like lots of bargains still to be had. Stewart Airforce Base (where?! )taco stand food offering to be upgraded in departure lounge too prior to launch in 3 weeks in the same article. I hadnt realised there was no official public or port authority transport to NYC (Coach USA being drafted in).
Will be interesting to see how this pans out...

Possible shared Hainan to Beijing flight (with DUB)

Could news of an EDI-China flight be just weeks away?

It still means DUB passengers reclearing security one hour after settling into their seats. Not ideal and a hard sell.

Why would they need to re-clear security? They've already been security screened.

The Pax traveling to Dublin if going via EDI will have to clear U.K. Border Controls as first point on entry to the CTA. Same applies if flight arrives in DUB all Pax will be seen by the Garda. It's a very complicated route hence why long delays in it being announced. The mixing of Pax will mean cases of passport swaps and inadequately documented arrivals at EDI and DUB. China asylum claims is a major immigration problem for U.K. & Eire. CTA rules add extra Visa & Custom problems.

Also CAA rules require rescreening of all international passengers to U.K. Standards.

Would the DUB passengers not be able to stay on the plane at EDI, to avoid mixing pax flows etc?

I don't believe that's allowed anymore, which is why double drops are now very rare.

April 2017 stats show great growth on EDI's routes to DOH and AUH:
  • EDI to DOH (QR) - load factor of 77%, year on year growth of 22%
  • EDI to AUH (EY) - load factor of 85%, year on year growth of 12%

Willing to bet that May will be less impressive as it is the quietest month for the ME routes.

Two queries for the insiders.

1. The FR flight from Corfu arrives at 8.15 but doesn't leave until 11.00 Why?

2. The EDI arrivals page shows a BA flight from Zurich, presumably an Embraer, although I couldn't find it on flightradar. However I can't see that the a/c goes anywhere afterwards; the only BA charter leaves at 7.20 to Palma and does a second rotation to Mahon. Odd?

For some reason the ALC departure doesn't seem to be on the EDI website. Thanks.
