It was showing signs of being resurfaced by the fire station when I saw it today. Long backtracks will be the order of the day to and from taxiway C and then along Delta to the aprons. They are also working on the intersection of Bravo and Alpha to make it more aircraft friendly by smoothing the junction out.

Building work on the extension to the immigration hall has been halted due to the overnight noise from the pile driver. The council are allegedly investigating the work as a possible breach of planning consent.

Sounds like Luton council have a bit of a conflict of interest regarding the works at a commercial location which they own

Which Airport Survey

It appears LTN has been voted worst airport out of 31 with just under 30%,the lowest ever score by Which, whilst SEN has achieved the highest score yet again with 84% customer satisfaction.

Doesn't surprise me and no doubt the airport will blame the building work when the truth of the matter is that the airport has not put a cap on passenger numbers.

Southend is number one because it is under utilised but no doubt wishes it was in Luton's position of operating way above capacity.

Being bottom of the table is having no effect on numbers at Luton and being number one doesn't seem to be having much effect on Southend either.

LTNman your comments are very true about both airports, however it's a brave airport management that unilaterally decides to cap it's own pax and commercial movements. I'm not sure what the response of shareholders and terminal tenants and concessionaires would be if they suddenly found business growth had been stopped.

Definitely accept your point LTNman regarding numbers, but having used both airports in the last few months there's more to it that the relaxed feel of an under utilised terminal. I think both airports could learn from each other.

Update on the airport website now stating the Immigration Hall extension will now be done during the day starting tomorrow (31st)so they don't seem to be put off if they have an investigation going on.

Southend is operating at one third capacity. If Luton was operating at one third capacity then Luton would have a mere 4 million passengers based on an acknowledged capacity of 12 million passengers rather than the 15.6 million it has today.

Southend's equivalent of Luton would be nearly 4 million passengers operating through a 3 million capacity Southend so when folk here say well done Southend they are comparing successful with unsuccessful not that Luton has anything to shout about.

and in bottom place again is .......

https://www.theguardian.com/business...five-years-row

“We’re disappointed in these results as they don’t accurately reflect the experience of the majority of our passengers"
Think they do

UK's worst airports named and shamed

Luton has been named as the worst UK airport for the fifth year running after scoring the lowest ever marks in a Which? Travel magazine customer satisfaction survey.

In contrast, Doncaster Sheffield airport was named as the best, scoring 87% for customer satisfaction compared with Luton's 29%.

Which? Travel said passengers used words including 'chaos', 'crowded' and 'rip off' to describe Luton, which is in the midst of a £110 million project to expand its capacity by 50% by 2020.

"That can't have helped the appallingly low customer satisfaction score of 29%, but Luton has languished at the bottom of our survey for five years and building work is no excuse for the one-star rating or lack of sufficient seats, shops or toilets and the penny-pinching prices, such as £1 for plastic bags," said Which? in its damning report.
Painful but true although the plastic bags are now free.

Stands charts old and new. The North apron has also been remarked so either the changes are so slight that they don't show up here or the latest chart is out of date. Stand 46 is missing at the moment as it is the site of a builders compound

As already pointed out Taxiway Bravo and the taxiway between A6 and A7 are closed between 21:00 and 05:00 for the next month

Charts

LTNman - that's not quite the latest chart. If you go into the AIP Amendments - 28 day section of the NATS IAIP the charts section shows the LTN ground chart effective 14 Sep. This shows the Northern Apron marked as 41R, 41 & 41L and 42R, 42 and 42L. It also updates the buildings showing the car park footbridges and Pier B. Interestingly it also shows the footbridge to stand 60 which certainly won't be in place in 2 weeks time!

The piling work on the extension to the immigration hall that only 48 hours ago had to be done at night has now switched to the day despite the comment from the airport below

Overnight works:

We have explored all possible alternatives to overnight working. However, because the location of the work is close to an official UK Border, passenger areas and a live airfield, the work must be carried out overnight for safety and security reasons.
Funny how when the airport found out that the BBC local TV news were about to do a live broadcast on the subject from the Holiday Inn with a nice view of the control tower in the background they soon changed their mind although by this time the council were muttering about a breach of planning consent.

The noise could be heard from over a mile away so it will not be a great experience for passengers and staff who will be just a few feet away.

The completion of work on the terminal cannot come soon enough and will have passed the half way mark now. I can't see any prospect of further major projects being carried out on the terminal for no other reason than a lack of space to build a further extension. Just hope that the passengers like it when it is finished but I think all that will be achieved will be more passenger misery but on a bigger scale as key issues like a lack of seating don't appear to be high on the list of proposed improvements.

Dropping friends off on Sudnay evening, I was interested to see the stupid layout of the drop off zone at first hand. The signs on the road were the first indication that it was going to be difficult as they did not reflect what the layout actually is when you get to the front of the queue.

Happily, whilst queuing to get out and pay my £3. there was a long hold up as the attendant tried to sort out a problem with one of the barriers that would not lift Eventually, he raised it and let people out. He then had to raise the others to be fair, whilst waiting for a tech. So at least i didn't have to pay. But what a stupid layout.

The barriers get lifted all the time to remove the backlog.

Early next year the drop off zone changes side so instead of cars moving over to the left hand lane they will have to move over to the right hand lane. Hopefully the new drop off zone will have a better layout with its extra lanes.

EL-AL

With 787's joining the El-Al fleet, are there plans for them too operate any flights to LTN at any point in place of 777?

Contract Loss

Swissport have lost WizzAir to handling agent Azzurra, taking LNT up to 3 handling agents. Contract ends on 30th November so expect to see them very soon.

Keen to see how they get on within the airport and what other contracts get swapped about, Swissport are gunning for Vueling and Blue Air to try and eliminate any redundancy’s

A bold move by the Italian Ground Hanging Operation, as they do a lot of work for EZY & RYR in Italy expect some aggressive pricing on those.
