I'm rather out of touch with LTN news these days. I understand easyJet have committed to expanding their LTN operation. Can anyone let me know how many aircraft and if a timescale as been suggested?

The SmartLynx is chartered from 1 April to the end of the summer schedule in October. There does not seem to be any general pattern regarding routes over the first few days, i.e. Amsterdam, Paris CDG, Alicante etc. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information much appreciated...

What airlines and aircraft are based at Luton for the summer schedule this year, and how does this compare to last year?

Just gone passed on a train and noticed that there is ground work taking place on the right side of Runway 08 (Hertfordshire side) ? Lots of digging with heavy machinery on the bank, any idea what this could be for ?

As predicted by some people here, the covered walkway is supermarket quality!

With Northolt closing for 6-9 months from Spring next year to facilitate major taxiway and runway rebuilding, how many of the 12,000 per annum biz jet movements will Luton be able to handle?

It was me. It isn't just supermarket quality the design is from a catalogue where there are various options for supermarkets. Most people will have already seen this design at many supermarkets as there is an option to put enclosed sides and a back on it for storing supermarket trolleys.

This is just the latest example of cost cutting to the bone and is nothing like the artist impressions of a designer walkway that the airport first published.

The artist impressions also showed quality paving but this was replaced by cheap as chips tarmac. Even the exterior walls of the second floor offices of priority parking in the multi-storey car park have been left as unpainted breeze blocks and lets not mention again the finish of the passenger footbridge. It all just adds to the impression of a utility airport that has set its sights at the very bottom of the market.

Luton has done very well at expanding this segment of the market but it seems clear that it is not chasing full fare business where passengers might expect a more upmarket experience.

I venture to suggest that the Airport knows its market, and is filling the niche it has identified.

Might have more to do with a limited franchise with the years now ticking by before Aena has to bid to run the airport again which they might lose.

This might also explain why the council is funding the link to Parkway on behalf of the council owned LLAL as Anea would never get any investment back for the remaining years. It also puts into question about any future investment by Aena after the present upgrade is finished apart from care and maintenance.

This will always be the case, with expansion and investment being minimal while the airport continues to be run by this business model from the council.

If the council had sold the airport 15-20 years back, I would suspect the airport would be a very different airport to what it is today, and investment would have been far greater. But no point on dwelling on what never happened.

Maybe the council could sell a share in the airport like what local councils did with Birmingham Airport, but still have a controlling share. There we have seen the runway expanded, upgraded facilities for the A380, terminals merged and new terminal expansions and car parks more on par with the quality you would find at airports like LGW and LHR.

Luton needs and needed a longer lease. Off the top of my head I think this existing lease was for something like 30 years which was taken out years ago by Bechel (can't remember the spelling) then was it TBI who took over. Think the airport has been run by 3 or 4 operators all on the existing lease but Aena got something like a 2 year extension for their investment.

I think Southend is something like a 99 year lease. Sorry to be vauge but I am away from my records this week so can't check my facts.

From the airports homepage if you stroll down to transforming Luton there is a news letter and 4 different 360 views which the user can spin around.

The way the concession has worked is that there is a flurry of capex at the start, when a return can be made over the term Then nothing until after renewal.
Unless something changes in the meantime, what is being invested now will be all until either 2031, or when the concession is further extended.

Will the new facilities being built, even last until 2031?!
