The route shown poses more questions with no obvious answers. Once inside the CTA does it remain in a cut and cover tunnel or does it pop out? Whether it does or doesn't everything on the route needs to be removed including a chunk of the new road that will serve the drop off area and the rest of the CTA. If the MTS just misses running along the approach road and ends up in the drop off zone the approach road will still need to be crossed. The exit route will also have to be crossed so that will also have to go and the road hasn't even gone in yet as part of the existing plans.

So while it is being being built how does traffic get into and out of the CTA? With the new multi-storey car park in place where would a new road go as the exiting new exit route that is being built now hugs the building?

With tunnelling machines what is above the route can in the main remain but this method is very disruptive. The only easy bit is crossing Taxiway Alpha. What happened back in the late 90's the taxiway was shifted and then put back with the tunnel being built in two halves.

With 2 TUI dream liners on the ground at the minute we have been seeing some larger planes lately. El Al have been operating a few 777 and 767 the last 2 weeks to deal with the extra demand. Tomorrow will see an El Al 777-200 and a 767-300 in at the same time. This hasn't happened before at the airport. Also the LY311 will still be operating in the morning so from 8:30 to 11:30 will see a 737-9, 767-3 and a 777-2.

The TUI 787's are obviously on scheduled maintenance change-over. There is around 20 weeks of 787 maintenance in H61 this winter.

I know both are in for maintance. It's just nice to see some bigger planes on the apron and for 2 to be in at the same time. Also I don't believe that 2 can fit into the hangar at the same time.

Another TUI 787 departed late last night to MAN, so unless it has positioned back again this morning I think more than just a change over.

You are very correct with that information. I was told that they was going to be 2 in but of course one went out last night to allow another one in this morning.

737-8.....Not sure where you got the info but won't see two 787's in H61 together this winter......(there's plenty going-on with the other types)

The TUI 787-900's wont fit so will be going elsewhere.....

TUI 787s

With 9 x 787-8 + 11 options against 3 x 787-9 + 1 I think H62 will be busy enough without the 787-9's

Regarding the Thomson/Monarch hangars. Are they owned or leased from the airport. I think we had this discussion once about the ZB one but I cant remember the outcome. Would it ever make sense to turn the engine bay "area" into some huge hangars out of the way and turn the current ones into parking etc. Just an idea, not something I have thought through deeply to be honest. Might just cost to much and be unecessary...

I just love the artists impression of what the Gateway Bridge could look like except it would never get built due to its height and the fact that it is nicely lined up with the end of the runway.

No doubt the final design will be cost engineered into a box bridge.

That is not the new rail link bridge, that is Luton's answer to the Heathrow runway ramp!

Construction update

Work continues on the midterm car park junction with the first part opened to what will be the duel carriageway.

The former bus station, which will be the terminal extension, still seems to be a long way from getting its framework put in place despite the contractor spending 10 months working on the site.

By contrast the new pier link building is steaming ahead. This is where the new service road will link to the existing service road. When that happends two more bus bays can be built.

The foundations of the new pier continue to go in.

Behind the hoardings in the departure lounge. This photo was taken a while ago and is the site of the former duty free shop. Bella Italia now recruiting for a new departure lounge restaurant so the opening can't be too far away.

LLA

The short term car park just has to be in the worst condition of any terminal car park in the whole of Europe. This photo just doesn't do justices to how bad it has become but it could easily be used to test the suspension of any 4x4 SUV

The multistory is being used by airport staff for priority parking but the car park is still being worked on. Also there is no public access to the car park yet due to ongoing work between the car park and the rest of the airport so it is probably the most secure airport car park in the country at the moment as no one can get close to it due to the new exit route which is now getting its top layer of tarmac from the exit barriers.

Shame they'll have to knoock down the multi storey as it is allegedly causing the bend in the localiser signal that has downgraded the ILS....
Rebuild it in wood perhaps?

Also as reported here a couple of months ago that Airbus have brought out a building screen that stops ILS disruption. The ILS was downgraded when the car park was under construction and still hasn't been restored yet.

Anybody considered the implications on the ILS (if any) of the mass transit rail link going so close to the 08 threshold as well ?
Just out of curiosity Signature must be pretty close to opening their new FBO terminal??
