It's not the wingspan of the 321s that are the issue for stand allocation, it's the length. I don't think they will fit on 60 or 61 and possibly not 1R. I'm sure someone in the know can confirm.

Extraordinary numbers for Luton.
12 departures between 5.55 and 6.15
22 departures by 7am
33 departures by 8am
40 departures by 8:15
at this point the departure board runs out of space.

SEN in decline?
@LTNman,
"Southend on the other hand, which is the UK's favorite airport seems tempting to even me and offers a level of service that Luton can only dream about. I have to say if I was running an airline that could use Southend's runway I would be thinking hard about putting new routes through Luton with that little gem sitting there underused."
Southend may have been voted the UK's favorite airport (possibly based on the fact that what it handles in a day Luton's popularity can draw in an hour) but for May of this year SEN showed a 'decline of 4.5% in passenger figures, so just maybe it has reached it's popularity thresh-hold?
I recall LCY being voted the favorite but the handling of an average 54 pax per flight as opposed to Luton's 140 does have some bearing on airport facilities.
I bet you though that the management of LCY and SEN would both dream of their airports being as busy as LTN with all it's current problems in terms of growing so quick!

Just for the record the reason for the decrease in SEN numbers for May year on year is down to it being a 3-aircraft rather than 4-aircraft easyJet base this year. It wouldn't be true to say that this suggests SEN "has reached its popularity threshold". A simple illustration of that is that SEN-AMS has varied between 3 x daily and 2 x daily in recent times and each time that it is increased pax numbers rise in line with the capacity increase.
I don't have any doubt that if easyJet revert to 4 aircraft next year that additional capacity will be easily filled.
Personally I'm really pleased to see LTN's continued passenger growth as that means the industry is growing strongly and if SEN's marketing department do their job there's no reason why they likewise shouldn't benefit from that growth. There is, of course, no comparison whatever between the prospects for LTN and SEN and the latter will always be an 'also ran' as far as the LON market is concerned but 2 mppa plus shouldn't be unachievable.

Easyjet talking about Rome's Fiumicino airport
"The airport provides a poor passenger experience, which has led to low levels of punctuality and customer satisfaction, which the recent capacity increases have exacerbated.”
As a result, easyJet will cease basing crew and aircraft there from next April.
Never a good idea to get too smug about Luton as airports like Southend have the spare capacity to remove 1,000,000 passengers from Luton without working up a sweat.
At times now Luton is just starting to remind me of 1974 and the tents. It's not there yet but then at the moment the land side cafes and bars are still open.

I agree there is no need to be smug but at least be a realist.
Southend is a little fish on the coast doing its own thing. The 2 airports are not even rivals as far as I am concerned. They may have the capacity but they could never steal 1 million pax from LTN. They couldn't even get the little Stobart wet dream failure flights they moved from LTN to work with everything in their favour. Let them get on with their stuff and good luck to them. The 2 airports are not even comparable.

I think 2016 will be a challenging year for Luton. Once that is out of the way we should see some marked improvements.
As for Southend taking substantial passengers from Luton, well that's what they did at Stansted when Easyjet moved aircraft to the east coast although I agree I can't really see it happening at Luton.
I think easyjet will hang in there at LTN but with their HQ within the CTA the directors, route planners and annalists will see first hand on a daily basis what is happening at Luton.

I can't imagine how LTN can sustain the current growth rate through what's probably an ever bigger revamp than what STN's having.

I never understand in the UK the lack of desire or maybe its lack of permission to build upwards. You could get rid of the enormous car parks and claim back so much room. It shouldn't be that difficult, There are spaces here there and everywhere to plop multi-storey car parks. Obviously traffic flow plays its part but still. Same goes with all these endless little hotels. Just build upward, reach for the clouds instead of building these 2 floor little chef looking buildings.
Referring back to Southend they and Stansted are rivals. They are in the same county/area that LTN isn't in. They will still never trouble STN long term, Not even remotely

According to FlightStats there are 32 scheduled arrivals and departures between 1655 and 1800 today 22/06/15. Add in a handful of exec jets and that figure could be around 40 movements. Must be close to max runway utilisation given the runway & taxiway configuration. So it's not just the early morning peak that can be busy at LTN.

Car Parking
I totally agree with the lack of inspiration when it comes to car parking.....
Years ago, I was involved with a project tasked with additional flow rate, aprons and car parking at LTN, whenever there was mention of a multi-storey car park it was slung out at the 1st mention of it and cost always came into it.
I did come up with one proposal, and it went hand in hand with a full length taxiway. My idea was to dig down and create a multi-storey, using the earth to infill the land for the taxiway to the end of 26. There would have been hardly any blot on the landscape, but no, too expensive. Their faces were an absolute picture!!
I wonder though, why have they never invested in the make shift 2 level car parks you see dotted around at train stations these days? Even just for the summer periods

Well Luton will be getting a multi-story car park soon.
I see the airport is using its tried and trusted method of car park construction for the new staff car park by the side of the car hire centre. Very little tarmac and a great deal of crushed stone parking bays. Give it a few months for the potholes to arrive just like the midterm car park and parts of the short term car park.
This new car park replaces part of the southern staff car park that closes at the end of the month.
