I really can't see Monarch winning on cost with Ryanair and easyJet with their cost base. Monarch should be working on an option that is a cut above that is worth paying a small premium for, that is good quality, but not British Airways. Somewhere along the lines of what JetBlue offer in the states, and even bring back the Crown Service brand for the 'packages'.

Hi Lee Baker Street,

Whether iconic or not, as can be debated it is highly irrelevant. It's Iconic status has not delivered it profitable growth. The state of the airline calls out that price is now king and it puts itself in the exact same space as FR and EZY competing for the same passengers.

I think unless the management can identify and implement a strategy that takes them away from that space, the number will be up soon.

Monarch

I for one hope that Monarch can find their niche and be around for a long time to come.

I do agree that trying to take on the low cost giants directly isntt perhaps the best strategy and that something closer to a full service offering but at an affordable price may be the way to go, built around a return to their old Crown Service proposition.

Whichever route they choose, it's not easy but I'd rather have a Luton that boasts some Monarch tails than one that's even more orange than it is now

Nice Turkish Airlines A330 on a football charter the other day. Think I saw a Fokker 100 yesterday also! Reminded me of British Midland using the white fokkers on the Jersey route back in the day.

Is that from an enthusiast point of view or...? Because long term a well run profitable airline with good quality service expanding from its home base surely trumps an airline that has no idea what direction it is going, Loses money and has seen its service quality drop. I am a huge ZB fan for nostalgic reasons and it's part in Luton but long term as it is More EZY tails would benefit the airport more then ZB.

Thomson have added a weekly service to Naples for S15, on Fridays.
This summer they were buying seats on ZB's scheduled flights.

London Luton Airport outperforms the competition

FromLondon Luton Airport website
Published: 02 October 2014

London Luton Airport outperformed all other UK airports in August, enjoying record passenger numbers and its busiest month on record.

The Airport recorded an 11.8% increase in passenger numbers in August compared to the same month last year, beating Gatwick’s increase of 8.2%. The average increase across all UK airports was 4.4%.*

London Luton is on track for the busiest year in its 76 year history. The increase is being driven by new routes and carriers and a new ten-year deal with easyJet announced in March which will see the airline grow capacity at London Luton by 20% over the next year.

New destinations on sale this summer included Naples, Catania and Skiathos with more opening up this winter, such as Copenhagen, Lyons and Basle. New airline partner, Atlasjet, commenced flights to Istanbul in May.

The news comes as London Luton embarks on a £100m redevelopment of the Airport, which will increase annual passenger capacity from 12 million to 18 million per year by 2026. The plans include an expanded and modernised terminal building, better rail and other surface transport links and improvements to the passenger experience, including additional screening lanes to reduce waiting times.

The changes are forecast to increase the Airport’s annual economic impact by £283m to £1.2bn per annum and create over 5,000 new jobs.

Clive Condie, Executive Chairman of London Luton Airport Operations Limited (LLAOL), said: “Interest in London Luton from leisure and business passengers has never been higher. This is a great platform from which to launch our ambitious redevelopment programme and enable London Luton to become a leading airport serving London, Luton and the surrounding regions.”

Figures can be made to show anything you want, they are comparing apples and oranges. The story could have been written the other way and showed actual passenger number increases of which Gatwick would have been far higher. Its good to see growth across all airports.

A Luton Airport production.

A little economical with the truth I would say unless you was quite lucky.

The video doesn't show the traffic backlog from half way along the bus route to the terminal, the idiots parking on the roundabout to avoid drop-off charges, or the queues for check in, queues through security or the crush in the departure lounge. It was filmed before some idiot allowed a duty free shop to be built just inside the three exit doors that completely blocks egress from baggage reclaim whenever a few alchoholic pax decide to do some last minute shopping. It doesn't show the dripping roofs, cracked floors or multitude of broken airside doors onto the apron. It does show some illuminated directions signs with bulbs not working, so it's not entirely inaccurate. It make Disney cartoons look like documentaries.

Anyone know if there's a plan for staff access once they start messing about with the approach road and out the front of the terminal, like using the cargo apron security gate and busses?

Autair hangar needed a preservation order on it!

Spent many a moment getting a free coffee from the girls at Executive Express in there.

Motorhead, Brian Ferry and Culture Club were regular users of G-BRON etc.

(Hello, long time lurker, first time poster)

That's actually a very nice video, even if they did manage to make our "Israeli Visitor" look like a stereotypical Mossad operative. Luton were clearly pretty chuffed with their shiny new full service El Al TLV route back then weren't they? Strange and a shame it has only a few hundred views on a shell of a Luton Airport Youtube account.

I'm not so sure it's that economical with the truth. Just "rose tinted." Whenever I've arrived through Luton I've always wizzed through immigration and baggage has always arrived speedily, though last time the escalators on the way were out of order. Note our "Israeli Visitor" was hand-luggage only which sped things up.

Can't vouch for the train as I always arrive by car.

Perhaps El Al passengers just get better treatment because the airline does exceptional things like pay for an appropriate number of check-in desks and priority security. Or maybe El Al just schedules itself at a time when the airport isn't a complete shambles.

The biggest oversight is the failure to mention the mandatory lengthy El Al interrogation and potential cavity search in the room to the right of the gate. I am a young male traveling alone and always look like a right bum when I fly so I always get pulled aside for an extra check.

I didn't know about the El Al executive lounge though. Do they actually have their own or do they just fence off part of the Servisair one?

If someone told me a few years ago that a Boeing 777 would operate a scheduled service from a state airline into Luton I would have thought them quite mad.

OK the 777 might only operated around holiday times with 767's and 737's operating the rest of the time but it was a big coup when El-Al came to Luton after giving up on Stansted.

Looks like he left Stansted when MAG took over. Went to Aberdeen for a few months afterwards.
