I don't get all the talk about a new Waterford route starting up from Luton...
Im sure Waterford would love someone to pick up the route but it ain't going to happen anytime soon, unless there is an airline with the right equipement willing to base an aircraft at either Luton or Waterford.
The Irish airport is too small to handle the likes of a 737-800 or A319 that Ryanair or easyJet can fly in. FlyBE are cutting back their routes and only operate into Waterford from Manchester and Birmingham, because that is a base for them.
Im sure there is demand for the route, but I don't see the demand being any higher than if the route operated to/from another London airport.
To quash the ideas further of FlyBE ever operating the route, if anyone cares to go to the Waterford airport website they are making the most of the exisiting FlyBE routes and the airline offers onward connections to Dusseldorf, Paris, Nice and numerous other UK airports. They will have no connections to offer here at Luton and FlyBE are barely going to be willing to use the route to feed passengers on to other airline routes with the likes of easyJet.

If I remember rightly Derry which has a runway of around 1900 metres, Ryanair has to operate with some restrictions and blocks out several rows of seats for these services.
Doing a Google search only confirms the Irish Government is willing to part fund the extension and the airport has got to fund the rest and this funding has yet to be secured. I highly doubt this work will be completed in time for the Summer 2014 timetable for Ryanair starting to operate the route!

Well Edinburgh are snapping at Lutons heels for fifth busiest airport in the UK right now(only 2500 passengers difference) so it needs to happen if they want to keep in the top five-if that means much to the PR Department these days!!
Whilst Edinburgh has been remarkably successful over recent years, it can only overtake LTN temporarily - assuming the LTN development proceeds.
Air traffic in the London area is increasing far more robustly than elsewhere in Britain, and Luton is well placed to attract traffic growth if it has the capacity. EDI will gain if Scotland becomes independent, but that will not be happening any time soon, despite Mr Salmond's best efforts. Whereas there is shortage of capacity in the London area, the same can't be said for the Central Belt of Scotland.

It's a really bad idea for Luton to try to one-up against Edinburgh in the monthly stats - it leads to management thinking only about the short term and neglecting the more strategic issues. The only time it's worth considering, is perhaps if there's an Xmas party and someone wants to come in fancy dress as the Edinburgh bogeyman for everyone to say "Boo ! Hiss !"

Rolling year Luton 9660121 and EDI 9657586.
EDI tends to drop off a cliff edge in November but not sure about this year.

Depends if the airframe used is based at either? I would guess the yields must be good to keep the routes going so far?
I guess much re-scheduling after the bases close. Going to be a good few folk lose thier jobs inc the junior FOs on the minimum wage and with huge training debts employed by agencies.

With easyJet adding new routes from Gatwick to Paris & Brussels next year, I wonder if we might in time see Brussels added to the Luton network since they obviously see potential in the route despite the dominance of Eurostar.
Paris can & does work from Luton so why not a daily Brussels service?

I'd like to know how Gulfstream got planning permission with almost minimal fuss for their new hangar, despite the fact it totally dominates the local skyline, more so than anything else.
Obviously I have no problem with GS expanding their operations at LTN; more jobs and opportunities are desperately needed, however I'd possibly think it wasn't 100% thought through town planning wise.
