NQY-BHX winter 15/16

Looks like a possibility that BE could continue NQY-BHX for winter 15/16. All the other seasonal destinations ex NQY don't give the option to search past October however for this route it shows as searchable but no flights currently loaded. I wonder if this roite might be about to go year round even if just 3-4 weekly during winter ?!

RE NQY-BHX winter 15/16

I'm sure there could be a market for this route year round , price dependent. I have family that now live in Dorset and use this service on a regular basis (because it really is cheaper than road or rail) to travel back and forth to the midlands so it is not completely used as ' visit the seaside' type of service , also if Flybe are serious about BHX as a hub this type of route is crucial (I'm thinking about the new code share with EK) .
.....but after after a little thought and knowing flybe they won't...

Stats for May 2015 of course!

Total number of flights was down by nearly 5%

These are poor figures compared to other similar UK airports who are experiencing good increases. The Flybe route cull is affecting things here, the only noticeable growth this summer will be because of the extra Emirates from August. Thankfully, things look better for winter 15/16!

Waterford 18% wow.

Yes, but on the first 4 rotations (2 in, 2 out) after no service for a few months, with a new, and largely unknown airline.

I think we'll have to wait until June's figures to get an idea of how the route is really performing.
Waterford in May 2015 carried 801 passengers, that's 22 per flight and a 44.5% load factor

Waterford in May 2014 carried 1951 pax at a greater frequency

American May 2015

CAA figures show American carried 4,944 pax on the new JFK route, an average of 107 per flight, that's a load factor of 59%. Not a bad start

United carried 8343 pax in May 2015, down 6% on May 2014, so not too badly affected by American

Wizz

Great news more diversity of low fares. Means Birmingham is not too reliant on one major low fares airline.

Grrr

Wizz Air is to introduce flights from Birmingham for the first time later this year.

The Hungarian low-cost airline will make Birmingham its eighth UK airport when it launches services to Warsaw and Budapest in September.

Wizz’s Birmingham-Warsaw route will operate on Monday and Friday from September 14. While Birmingham-Budapest flights will run on Tuesday and Saturday from September 15.

William Pearson, aviation director at Birmingham Airport, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Wizz Air to Birmingham airport. We expect these new services to be popular with business travellers, due to the twice-weekly frequency.”

Wizz Air spokesman Daniel de Carvalho added: “We hope our first two services to Hungary and Poland will stimulate tourism and hospitality sectors as well as strengthen business relations between the three countries.”

I very much doubt it!

Wizz at BHX

Surprise surprise there are the usual negative comments about a new airline at Birmingham
Wizz is a new airline for Birmingham, linking Birmingham to two capital city routes. Both have been operated in the past, both carried very reasonable passenger loads and were closed due to a WAW base closure and FR falling out with BUD.
Good news that a fast expanding airline is starting flights from Birmingham. This added to Norwegian and Veuling who started flights this summer. This is what Birmingham needs not an over reliance on one or two low fares airlines that often "throw their toys out of the pram."

Totally agree Daza, and some of the intro fares are incredible, some good bargains to be had

Wizzair

Fabulous news, Wizz are a fast expanding airline and exactly the type of carrier BHX should be attracting. Great to see two missing capital cities back on the BHX departure boards. I think these routes will do very well and based on their ops at other UK airports I can see further routes from BHX in the future. Well done BHX, let's keep fingers crossed for that rumoured Norwegian base next year as well!

Daza, you've got the wrong end of the stick. It was simply a little humorous dig at the airline's somewhat over zealous PR department suggesting it would be "popular" with business travellers. Most business travellers prefer multiple daily service. It's not to say that the route will not succeed as a leisure route or that it will not indeed carry the odd business traveller, but a twice weekly frequency is hardly likely to attract more than a tiny trickle of business travellers.

Well I read this comment as refering to someone who should (and probably does) know better making a clearly ridiculous statement (or more likely following the corportate propoaganda line) rather than anything detrimental about the Birmingham market.

With Luton already built up to a decent frequency on these two routes but rapidly running out of capacity Wizz need to start testing other outlets - I predict they will grow from this rather tentative start.

Wizz & Aer Lingus

AerRyan

I assume you mean Cork and Shannon and not Dublin? Dublin is four daily Saturday - Wednesday and five daily Thursday and Friday and no sign of a 6th as per the online article, not even during Cheltenham.

Having said that they do have some competitive fares to the US, very topical considering the ding dong on the Manchester thread.

Wizz

Fantastic news even if they do charge for some hand luggage. The only slight negative aspect is the days of operation of the Budapest. Warsaw you could probably operate at 03.00 on a Monday/Tuesday night in winter and it would still fill but I would have liked the Warsaw days of operation on the Budapest route but of course it doesn't work like that.

Budapest has only ever been operated by Ryanair (I think) and was dropped after a spat about Hungarian Airport charges but it was noticeable that not all UK routes were discontinued but BHX was one of them. Despite that the CAA stats for 2012 show 25384 pax with 158 rotations giving a load factor of 84% for a 40 week operation.

Warsaw per the 2008 CAA stats was 37063 with 234 rotations by Norwegian and 109 by BMI Baby giving an average of 108 pax per flight at a load factor of 73% based on 149 seats (some BMI baby were 500's at 131 seats).

Strange how at the time it seemed Norwegian were packed out on every flight but the figures show otherwise. I also thought Ryanair struggled early season on Budapest but if they did it was not for long.

I remember Norwegian and Baby fares were very soft and although the former was always going to end with the closure of the Warsaw base, I would only describe the pax figures as okay. I am sure low yields were mentioned for the BMI Baby and FR Budapest route closures mixed in with airport charges but there is definitely a market. Market conditions are probably better now and of course it is a different airline and hopefully both routes will be successful.
