Well: depends on the lifestyle of the passengers - and their preferences.
My old Asus used in this situation would (at some cost) probably bring the WiFI to a standstill.

More seriously: For most PAX it will come down to Trip costs and date availability.

Quite agree wholeheartedly on costs and times etc. I find it rather sad to see so many Brits when they come down here having a late breakfast (usually a fry-up) sitting in the sun and supposedly enjoying the ambience and all they are doing is looking at their smartphones whole trying to eat. Me personally a holiday is to get away from the hum-drum of everyday life and relax or if you prefer an adventure holiday not looking at a bleeding screen on a phone. Nice to see Norwegian expanding and not only at Gatwick.

I agree - it's the same with these new fangled book things - staring into them instead of looking at the real world
Seriously - whether people choose to read from a smartphone or clutch a novel - who cares? Live and let live!

On the subject of free wifi - I think with 4 airlines flying to Barcelona, free wifi could tip the balance for some customers - particularly those with teenagers.
That and obviously price!

Norwegian Press Release

Norwegian has announced further expansion at Birmingham Airport with new routes to Las Palmas and Tenerife launching in November.

The new flights are on sale at Cheap flights to Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm - Norwegian and will operate year round using brand new, 186-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The low-cost airline, which offers free WiFi on all flights, is adding almost 30,000 seats to its’ Birmingham network with the new services.

Norwegian

Details of new flights:
• Flights to Tenerife launch on 2 November and will operate on Mondays and Fridays, with fares starting from £49.90 per person

• Flights to Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) launch on 6 November and will operate on Fridays, with fares starting from £49.90 per person

The addition of Las Palmas and Tenerife means that Norwegian now offer five destinations direct from Birmingham Airport. The low cost airline also serves Malaga, Madrid and Barcelona.

Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian’s Chief Commercial Officer: said: "We are pleased to announce further growth at Birmingham Airport with the introduction of new year round flights to Tenerife and Las Palmas.

"These popular winter sun destinations follow on from the three new routes to Spain introduced earlier this year. We have been delighted by the response from holidaymakers across the Midlands keen to secure quality, low cost fares and look forward to welcoming them on board our new flights this November."

Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director for Birmingham Airport, added: “This is really great news and comes less than two months after Norwegian started flying from Birmingham Airport. The decision to add Tenerife and Las Palmas to its existing Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga services shows confidence in Birmingham by Norwegian and we‘re certain that this additional choice will be welcomed by Midlanders wanting to travel on business or leisure to Spain.”

Now showing that the current 12 weekly service is retained for winter - just the one flight on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Not always guaranteed to keep the summer increases, as EDI reverted to daily last winter and is showing daily again next winter.

AerRyan

The Shannon is not too bad as it was often a 48 seat aircraft and at least it will 72 seats this time round. Also a loss at present is Dublin with the Thursday and Friday EI278/9 or 3278/9 not operating.

Much as many of us detest seeing our kids/grandkids glued to their phones, WiFi is here to stay. Therefore, the offer of FREE WiFi may well be an attractive incentive for many to choose Norwegian.

Icelandair

Does anyone know if today's Icelandair flight operated? I can't find any traces of it anywhere and was wondering if it had been cancelled.

Nice little surprise from AA this morning - they sent a 767! I'm guessing it was an operational issue though rather than a planned upgrade.

March STATS/AA

chinapattern - operational unfortunately.

Stats - CAA actual monthly figures for March - average per seat my estimates and load factors the same. Note EK, I think the third service could have been filled from January onwards (less May & June of course).

The flybe services which have ended are interesting and even if we accept services with 65-85% load factors are loss making (no reason to doubt it) then you would think other operators might take a look of some of them but as yet Toulouse, Florence, Knock, Cologne and Oporto have not been taken and only Waterford has with Hamburg, Reykjavik, Perpignan, Alicante, Palma and Ibiza served already with other airlines.

The AA 767 left half empty so one presumes an operational issue rather Han capacity necessecity. No explanation given onboard for swap.

April 2015 Passengers

Total: 770468 +1.6%
Rolling year: 9900928 +5.9

Air Transport movements down 2.5%

May looks quite slow too with a few less flights compared to last year, mainly thanks to Flybe!

Edinburgh and Luton are soaring ahead

I think it will pick up a bit in Jul/Aug

Well, I can tell you that there are only 4 economy seats left on this Sunday's flight, and 17 left on the flight that lands at BHX on Monday 1st June.

Sounds ok to me, given it's early days :-)
