BHX-PEK and BHX-HGH excellent result
More sloppy journalism: they're calling Hangzhou-Xiaoshan (HGH) "Shanghai-Hangzhou".
Bit like calling Elmdon "London-Birmingham" - it's BS, bet the chinese press isn't doing that!!
It will be Shanghai West next! Pure FR-speak.
According to GCM:
HGH-SHA 86 mi.
HGH-PVG 103 mi.
BHX-LHR 87 mi.
BHX-LGW 112 mi.
Still, excellent result for BHX and good to see it. No other UK airport is linked to HGH so that's a "first", and Hangzhou is a pleasant city.

Absolutely agree with ATNotts to see an airline wanting to use an airport outside the south east of England. Lets hope there are more, whether they fly to MAN or BHX.

Good news for BHX - will be interesting to see if it does end up being a series for a fixed period or a year round service.

If they are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hainan group then Hainan would be shooting themselves in the foot to do anything to the detriment of either service!

Another interesting point is Birminghams Paul Kehoe, now thats a chap with a really big chip on his shoulder. His comments concerning Manchester Airport are nothing short of nonsense. The unfortunate case is this Birmingham, is geographically too close to London, and on the other side it comes up against Manchester airport. Birmingham can provide a certain niche, whilst being squeezed between the other larger airports.

Like him or loathe him,one thing you cannot deny is that Mr Kehoe and his team including Tom Screen and William Pearson are delivering results.
It has taken a while, considering BHX was just coasting along handling 8-9 mppa.
A complete change of direction and policy and all of a sudden airlines are talking to BHX,and in many cases liking what they are seeing and hearing.
I for one applaud what he has achieved, and as the previous poster points out being sandwiched by bigger and busier airports,it will always be that bit more difficult to attract airlines.
However unlike the previous poster I believe there is enough demand for both BHX and MAN to have flights to larger and developing economies, whether it be China, India or wherever.
With China's economy showing signs of recovery, businesses and tourists alike can all benfit.

Bayer328, of course you are entitled to your opinion. As bhx bod has explained, BHX under Paul Kehoe's stewardship has made great strides and looks set to increase its annual passenger numbers from less than 10m to over 11m in just over a year. Not bad going i think you will agree.
And yes there is plenty of work to be done and growth to be achieved.
Can i best put it by quoting a poet who you might have heard of who was born near Birmingham and who is being remembered by the nation this week : 'To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first'.

I don't mean to wee on anyones parade, and this applies to MAN maybe more than it does to BHX, but a large slice of me thinks recent successes at these airports are more due to restricted capacity in the SE. I'm pretty sure if Saudia, Cathay, Hainan, Beijing Capital could get in, or expand, LHR they would instead. The situation must be making route development at BHX / MAN a tad easier...but hey, long may that continue
