LDY

CARNMANORLAD

Plenty of rumours at BHX but not heard anything about LDY.

I suppose flybe, EIR and VLM could be in the frame but BE certainly have spare capacity this summer at BHX with the Q400 and the other two airlines would have to work through other bases but that is rumoured with Shannon.

danielsirrom

No idea but the times to vary with a 9am start in May, August 08.45 and November back to 9am. Perhaps arrival slots at the JFK end or even stand pressures at BHX on some mornings from August - UA, AA, EK daily with T5, TOM 787, TS A330 on certain days although the T5 seems to be a lot earlier in summer on the Friday.

Isn't the 9am time under GMT? With the clocks going forward this Saturday, this would be 10am under BST.

S15 - Stobart Air (Aer Lingus Regional)

Shannon to resume on June 18th routing Dublin-Birmingham-Shannon-Birmingham-Dublin with an ATR 72-600 6 x weekly

The flight departs Birmingham at 16:55 and returns from Shannon at 20:35 Sun to Fri. This could mean an extra Dublin rotation as the only ATR Dublin flight in the summer schedule is late morning 11:10/11:35, but there could be some retiming. The Dublin schedule has not been updated yet

S15 - Stobart Air (Aer Lingus Regional)

While the Shannon Service is good news, the Dublin service is quite a surprise...

I thought these were all flown by Aer Lingus mainline fleet on A32x family of aircraft, as I have used in previous years.

Has the Ryanair competition resulted in Aer Lingus downgrading to Props? I'm surprised considering Birmingham is one of the larger UK Aer Lingus destinations, and thought the props were reserved for the regional airports.

The usual EI schedule during the week uses a mix of A320(3 a day),and ATR's (2/3 a day).
There are variations, some days there is a fourth A320 in the evening and at weekends more ATR's are used.
A321s are occasionally used when loads are high.

The above post refers to the Dublin schedule only.
There is also the twice daily Cork using ATR's.

Actually the props appeared as part of a big push, going 6x daily at one point to DUB.

From the start of the S15 schedule, Cork is reduced to one flight only on Saturdays, twice daily on other days

NEWS - Foreign Investment in Birmingham (read the last sentance)

Qatari investments in London, particularly in property and retail, are well-known and the capital remains an attractive prospect. But it is a city in the West Midlands that is currently catching the eye, not just of investors from the Gulf but from around the globe. Birmingham, famed for its advanced manufacturing sector, is currently seeing stronger growth than anywhere else in the UK. The massive HS2 rail project, the biggest railway building venture since Victorian times, is having a galvanising effect on the potential of the region.
Gulf Times spoke to Neil Rami, chief executive, Marketing Birmingham, to learn more. He explained: “In the last 12 months we have seen our Gross Value Added (GVA) rise by 6% against a UK rate of 1.6%. We are seeing stronger growth here than anywhere else in the country — at twice the level of London. The smart money is now recognising that London is no longer going to provide the same attractive returns as it has in recent years. It’s still a primary global market but there are fewer opportunities.”
He ran through some of the latest data: “Birmingham is leading the export led growth recovery of the UK. The West Midlands region has seen a 40% increase in exports and we are the only city region that has a trade surplus with China. The key driver for us is our advanced manufacturing sector; Jaguar-Landrover is helping to drive that charge. The IP, the heritage and the R&D remain here. Jaguar-Landrover will invest 5bn in its R&D in the UK next year. We are also seeing a surge around the supply chains within the automotive and aerospace sectors.”
Jerry Blackett, chief executive, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, pointed out the competitive edge of Birmingham: “The business and professional services sector is already the largest outside of London and we see that as having great growth potential.” HS2, he said, would cut down the journey time between Central London and Birmingham to just 39 minutes.
There has been a 57% increase in foreign direct investment, with the US accounting for 41%. Notably, there is growing interest from the Middle East in investing in property. Considering that 80,000 new homes need to be built by 2031, it’s not surprising that investors are seeing the potential.
JLL reports that overall investment volume in Birmingham increased 19% to £1.04bn last year, an 86% increase on the five-year average for the city.
PwC places Birmingham sixth in Europe in terms of international real estate attractiveness, ahead of London which was ranked tenth.
The HS2 rail project is acting as a catalyst for growth and regeneration throughout the region as evidenced in the surge of new business ventures.
“We are seeing a much more eclectic mix of start-up companies particularly in the technology/creative/life sciences areas. Birmingham is the most entrepreneurial UK city outside London. We had 18,500 new businesses last year representing an increase of 2,000 on the previous year which is significantly more than any other regional centre in the UK.
“Here in the West Midlands we have a population of 14mn people. We are a big region that offers long as well as short term opportunities,” said Rami.
Two new train stations are being built for HS2 — one right in the centre of Birmingham at Curzon Street, and one close to Birmingham Airport — the Interchange. Rami commented: “From a global perspective, suddenly Birmingham is becoming a much bigger place — 45mn people will be able to access the airport within an hour.”
The Birmingham Curzon Urban Regeneration Company will lead the redevelopment of the 141 hectare Curzon Street area surrounding Birmingham’s planned HS2 station. It is one of the biggest urban regeneration schemes in Britain. The Birmingham Curzon HS2 Masterplan outlines how stimulating the area’s economic growth could deliver 14,000 jobs, some 600,000 sqm of new employment floor space, more than 2,000 homes and up to £1.3bn a year to the local economy.
HS2 is expected to create some 26,000 jobs across the Greater Birmingham & Solihull area, and boost the West Midlands’ economy by £4bn per year. Last week saw the launch of the £500mn plan to regenerate a 14 hectare site at the heart of the city centre. The Birmingham Smithfield development is expected to create over 100,000 sq. metres of new floor space, 1,000 new homes and 3,000 new jobs, adding £470mn GVA to the local economy and attracting millions more visitors to Birmingham.
The city’s Midland Metro tram system will be integrated into the site and bring Birmingham Smithfield within minutes of the proposed high speed rail (HS2) terminus at Curzon.
All this activity is raising the global profile of the region.
International tourism went up by 32% last year. Birmingham looks forward to welcoming more visitors from Qatar. As Rami put it: “We are keen to see direct connections from Birmingham into Doha

But as CEO of Marketing Birmingham - why wouldn't he say that?

By saying that HS2 puts Birmingham 39 mins away from London, he kind of undermines the case for direct flights though doesn't he?

He would, it's his job.

However his wording, and where his words (supposing he actually said them - we are talking about journalism here) were quoted perhaps add more weight than they otherwise might.

As for HS2, by the time shortsighted politicians have finished mauling the project, and there have been the inevitable planning delays, Birmingham won't be 39 minutes from London in my lifetime (nor that of most of the posters here I fear)!

All Names Taken,

Not exactly. 39 minutes from London is not the same as 39 mins from Heathrow.

easyjet

winter 2014/5

Good to see easyjet increase the Belfast to three daily on five days a week, now only Tuesday at twice daily and Saturday at once a day. Only three extra flights a week but still an increase. Three Sunday from the afternoon an extra on a Monday mid morning and Wednesday evening doubled.

9 out of the next 15 BHX outbounds to BFS are full and yes I know the schools break up tomorrow in Brum. Out of the next 11 Geneva outbounds sold out (counting today)- no seats from Sunday until next Friday outbound.

Geneva is the same frequency (and times by the look of it) and Grenoble. Geneva does start six days later at 11 December.

Daza

Odd the night before Shannon was bookable on 15/16/17 June but seems to be 18th as advertised.

Norwegian

LNIDA

Hi, yes it hadn't gone unnoticed but you beat me to it!

A little gutted actually as Madrid was on my agenda for April but the return flight on Sunday 12/4 was over £100 each when I was looking and it put me off and it has now dropped well below that figure by a long way but it is flybe to CDG instead and at least I get to go on the 195 again before they go.

Do you know when or if Norwegian winter 2015/6 BHX schedule is going on sale as I am surprised that at the very least, the last week in October was not released as an extension of summer like Ryanair and Monarch usaully do, as the Midlands half-term is that week.

I assume they still plan to operate from BHX?

Also do you know if the tie-up with Thomas Cook includes BHX and if so when from? Thomas Cook's BHX winter offering is quite poor especially compared to their fantastic summer offering and a little help from Norwegian might be a way of stimulating growth for both.

Easter

Hopefully with the Midlands schools staggering the Easter break it will give a boost to April pax figures and not only have Norwegian gained but I have never seen so many easyjet sell-outs and the upgrades have been coming thick and fast from the scheduled airlines, such as AF, LH, LX, TK and ZB have restarted a couple of destinations a few days ahead of the clock change.

Only flybe have put a dampner on matters with Waterford, Oslo and Toulouse ending today followed by Reykjavik, Oporto, Cologne, Hamburg, Florence and Knock tomorrow.

Small Planet

After will they won't they operate this summer for Cosmos, Small Planet have ended up with an aircraft at BHX for around a month but for the MOD flights.

New routes to Toronto and San Francisco from BHX this summer???!
That's according to the Birmingham Airport page on a large social media site.
Any truth in that does anyone know?
Excellent news if true.

Don't really care how "large" and "Social Media" site is, I tend to distrust most of their ilk - simply because they're often the source of mis-information, and sometimes darn right fabrications.

That said, Air India do make some strange, and fairly short notice decisions, so I suppose anything is possible.
