Nostalgia
I'll probably get flamed for saying this... Any chance of creating a new thread for the people that want to dwell on Luton's past?
Every other airport forum seems to talk about current and future issues. But in the Luton forum, we seem to go off on a tangent every few weeks to talk about the airport in many years gone by.
It is a bit like sifting through treacle to find out about the present!
Just an idea, and atleast keeps this forum in line with what is being dicussed on other threads!

Doubt you will get flamed though I must ask what current news is there, Its snoring boring like always with Luton.
The Flybe Guernsey application is the most interesting thing in weeks and weeks, says it all.

Sorry Giles but a lot of us on here hark back to the days when there were many different airlines and types of aircraft which visited or were based at Luton not the just three or four companies and either Airbus or Boeing so when some photographs appear from 30-40 years ago it pulls on the heart strings so to speak.
So - Personally I cannot remember seeing an Aeroflot Tu-134 at Luton only Aviogenex Tu-134s mainly on Saturdays parked on the pond and to be pedantic the Boeing 707s of Monarch and Maof are B720Bs and the Redcoat Britannia is in fact CL-44 G-BRED - oh happy days!
Excellent news about Guernsey though - hopefully someone will pick up the Waterford route.

I would rather read a post about Luton's past than read no post at all. There is only so much proper news anyway so if we took away past and peoples wish lists there would be nothing to discuss.
As long as it's not another badly spelt, stupid question by that odd "Boeing 737" chap, it's all fairly interesting actually. I like the history mixed in with the present of Luton.

I see the airport's spat with Aviva about the airport banning Aviva's London coach service has gone to the High Court. With both Aviva and the Airport hiring QC's it will be an expensive experience for the one that loses the case.

I was only a kid, and don't remember a great deal but my parents had a bit of an addiction with Yugoslavia between 1987 and 1990, and flew a menagerie of Yugoslav airlines, to take us on our holidays. Think we flew to, Pula, Dubrovnik, Split and Budva/Tivat airports.
We flew JAT twice, on a DC-9 and silver 737-300. Aviogenex, which I think was a 727 and in 1990 we flew Adria on a brand new A320.
The A320 was leased from Cyprus Airways and I think this was one of very few flying back then, as it had literally just been launched and considered how lucky we were...
By contrast we flew the JAT DC-9 the year before, and even back in the late 1980's I remember my parents commenting and calling the aircraft a dinosaur, and think we were delayed in both directions by about 4 hours due to technical problems. All the passengers made a joke and said JAT stood for Joke About Time. I think that is why we was so surprised to fly a brand new aircraft the following year, and was expecting the worst again!
I remember the DC-9 only has a curtain seperating the cockpit and was left open for nearly all the flight.
I think all baggage handling back then was done by either Britannia or Monarch and when you entered the check-in area on the left was a sea of yellow with Monarch Desks and right the blue and white striped Britannia desks. Monarch always did the ground handling for the Yugoslav carriers. Ironically never flew with of these two airlines until 1996 or 1998 respectively from the airport.

I seem to remember that the actual baggage loading was done by council workers employed by the airport.
This photo was taken in 1969 soon after the "new" terminal opened.
As well as Autair, Monarch and Britannia I seem to remember British Midland had a couple of desks and then in around maybe 1972 Dan-Air had some check-in desks but facing the other way to the rear of the offices in this photo.
After the luggage was weighed a porter would lift the cases off the scales and place it onto the belt which sat behind the counters.
When those offices were eventually knocked down, which by the way were accessed via a few steps, an old British Midland plastic sign turned up, which had been dumped below the offices. It was an advertising board with BMA Luton routes on it. I wasn't brave enough to ask if I could have it so I guess it was just thrown away.
People dressed smart in those days. Note that all the men are wearing suits or jackets.

They had more seating available then than we do now!!
I remember when the Debonair check in area was built at the front of the terminal.Narrow couldn't really describe it.
Think on one occasion flying to Moenchengladbach I got a free flight because they didn't take the money from the credit card-as if that would happen with EJ or RYR these days.They were destined to go under ! nice staff though.

LTNman, when I was talking about the check-in area, I wasn't even on the planet when that picture was taken... I was talking of the Terminal that still exists, opposite the Tinminal! I use to love the airport back then, from after checking in to the departaure lounge would take no more than 5 mins, and was literally a few foot steps away.
The duty free shop always seemed weird to me, as that hexagonal building sticking out of the departure lounge always use to make me think it was an after thought, of the terminal building.
I haven't used the gates in the old departure area in a few years, as my flights always seem to depart from the pier or at the gates before you get to the old lounge. Has that area had any money spent on it, as it looked shabby and run down four or five years... Also do the Ryanair flights still depart from the shed building attached to the rear or the old departure lounge.
I remember that shed always having no heating and when boarding at 6am on a winters morning for the first departure to Dublin, freezing my butt off!
