BMI REGIONAL-2
.....but there are some (mainly business) routes that Flybe just don't seem to be able to make work out of SOU....off the top of my head BRU, FRA, ZRH, and add DUS to that list, as it ends this week.
The first 3 I mentioned all used to operate on the EMB145 back in the days of BA Connect at SOU. Granted that this was during better economic times and that fares were sometimes eye-wateringly high.

Doesn't recent history tell us that these classic thin business routes are fundamentally worse propositions than they have been for the last twenty years? If Leeds--BRU doesn't work for BMIR why should SOU-BRU? Frankfurt has never been much good for that level of operation. APD, locos, the recession, fuel prices, and a bit more direct long haul (emirates etc) have changed the terms of trade. Actually the economics of what used to be KLM-UK must be interesting since they are the ones who have really bucked the trend.
Seems to me BMIR are looking for routes where there are reasonable specific intra company flows to provide a baseload. How many of those are there?

I suspect the proximity to Heathrow does not help Southampton on these sorts of business routes as people will go up the M3 for the frequency offered. Birmingham and Bristol probably suffer a similar but less marked effect too.

BMIR desperately need to arrange some interline agreements with various major airlines. They are ( as anothertyke has said) scratching around trying to find profitable point to point routes from the regions and the fact is, there are very few left that are underserved . Take the forthcoming service from BHX-LYS , a very sensible choice , but then FlyBe also see the potential of that route and with their tie in with AF and onward connections available to southern europe has had such an effect on BMIR that they are cutting the frequency before it had started.

But who could they interline with and where?
London--no slots
Brussels-- SN not big enough these days
Paris-- AF maybe but issues with AF/KLM tie up?
Frankfurt-- LH ???
Not many credible options really.

BMIR Birmingham flights
With BMIR new Birmingham services starting next week (Lyon looks to have suffered now 3x week being timed at almost the same time as new Flybe service)
Does anyone have any idea how bookings are on TLS and GOT?

BMIR @ BHX
I flew BHX-LYS on Friday just 17 of us on board. Great service though, nice food, very professional crew member and an on time flight. Flight deck door was open most of the way! It felt like flying in the good old days!
My only gripe was check in at BHX, one staff member for both the TLS and LYS flights, it took me over half an hour to get checked in, very unacceptable in this day and age of check in online etc. I only had hand luggage so it was even more annoying to wait that long. There must have been quite a few checking in for TLS.
I think BMIR have a great product but it needs tweaking, online check in please and airport bag drops too!! I hope they survive at BHX, I haven't seen much in the way of marketing although there are big signs now up in BHX itself advertising new routes. Surely code sharing would help. I flew back on BE last night, code shared with AF, there were about 40 on board, many were (or appeared to be!) French nationals. This must be helping BE with brand awareness in LYS.

Gay Friendly,
Re BMIR, unfortunately although offering a different service they have a similar problem to BMI Baby.. gas guzzling planes. They were fine when delivered what 14 yrs ago but oil prices tripled since then
Unless they can replace these gas guzzling 145s ,its going to be very hard to survive. Seems they haven't noticed that most airlines are getting rid of 145s as they are not economically viable .

Replace these planes is easier said than done in the current economic environment. Go for new jets or go for props? more seats or same?
They have not too many options with the current offer of planes and with their network and business model.

The grammatical rules of our wonderful English language take precedence over the hubristic buffoonery of marketing loons. Capitals for proper names every time. No exceptions. Back to school, precocious halfwits!
