State Aid?

People are surely not naive enough to think that Flybe saw a golden opportunity in Cardiff and pitched up with no 'incentives' on offer.
Virtually every regional airport has a Route Support fund and Cardiff will be no different. The only issue is how much is being given to Flybe and is it value for the Welsh taxpayer? Time will tell.

It really dose begs the question to how much the owners of Cardiff, Doncaster-Sheffield, Exeter and Norwich airports are paying Flybe (for project Bluebird) for these operations?

I bet the are other UK airports now thinking the glad the didn't get into bed with Flybe on theses deals?

Do not know if this is the right place to put this, but it seems Cardiff Aviation is in a row with the Welsh government:

Eurowings for Thomson

Looks like Thomson Airways have replaced AlbaStar with Eurowings for one of their weekly PMI-CWL-PMI routes for Summer 2017......according to the Thomson booking engine. Nice to see another new face at CWL

Still no "full" announcement from Cobalt regarding the new UK destinations of CWL, GLA or NCL despite MAD being announced today....

Summer 2017 is fast approaching, isn't it time to announce now ??

You seem very enthusiastic about the prospect of Cobalt flying from Cardiff after your extensive amount of posts on the subject, I do hope you intend flying with them if or when they actually do commence services!

It is late to be releasing a new route and a new unknown Airline. Rather wait another year and have it released earlier than release it now and potentially not perform and get pulled.

Thanks for your concern and for your information yes I will be flying with them as I currently travel to LCA or PFO about 5-6 times a year to visit family that live there and the hike to BRS and LHR is a total pain hence my excitement about Cobalt !!!!

What's going to happen to the CWL-VLY route now that Citywing have gone into unfortunate receivership ?

Who is the Welsh Government going to award this too next ? Highland Airways, Links Air and now Citywing all gone.......such a shame, will they put the tender out again or not bother ??

Hopefully they don't tender it out again, but knowing them they will tender it out again.

If they do, then there's a certain operator which i'd like to see on the route and they'd be interested in a PSO route and are doing well at CWL at the moment. The punchline ... T3 ! Get one of those aircraft based down here for VLY and add in LBA and an additional midday NCL. Sorted.

Yeah totally agree, thought they would have gone for the license previously.......be quite a good route for them to pick up (should they want it).

I imagine the Government will go ahead with the tender bidding again especially as VLY was purposely built for the CWL route.

We will most probably be blown out of the water by some comments later on but J41 be a nice aircraft for this route

The last time this went out to tender, VLY couldn't handle aircraft with more than 19 seats.

"especially as VLY was purposely built for the CWL route"

There have been runways at Valley and Mona for a long time before the air service started...

Interesting that the Manx 2 press release states that you will be able to travel by train from Cardiff or stations Holyhead to Bangor with your flight ticket.

Now then, British Rail (some of you posting might not remember them) started Holyhead to Cardiff through services in March 1985, the service survives today with Arriva Trains Wales, subsidised by the WAG...

"Traws Cambria" by bus started in June 1979 under the auspices of the National Bus Company (some of you posting might not remember it either), with support from (the then) Welsh Office. It's still running under the "TrawsCymru" brand, supported by the WAG.

Do the WAG really need to keep another subsidised way of getting North to South by air, with at the most 38 passengers each way, each day?

MH.

Historically I recall reading that it was all about a serving politician who lives in Holyhead and needs to commute back and forth to Cardiff.

Who the hell wants to go to Holyhead anyway? I recall one time I went there it's not exactly tourist country, blink and one could miss it!

There are other commercial airports in north Wales other than out out on a peninsula (island) the back end of nowhere, I'd suggest that Hawarden would be much better placed, reasonably convenient for the largest north Wales town of Wrexham, for Chester (I know Chester's in England!), a selection of train stations and main roads locally.

But that's if WAG want to continue throwing good money after bad!

That's got to be good news for CWL, Eastern are a British airline that are known for their style and service. They already serve NCL & ABZ from CWL and it would not be a shock if we will see a flight in between the VLY sectors.

The J41 (I assume it is) is also much more passenger friendly and spacious too.

Well done to Eastern !!

Are they taken over the PSO or is this just an interim arrangement until WAG put it out to tender again?

But, it was a GBP1.2m per annum subsidy for a Do228, a L410, a J41 uses significantly more fuel than either of those, it's overflight charges, landing and parking fees, indeed just about everything, shall be more expensive so are they going to achieve all this on a GBP1.2m per annum subsidy?

And the Eastern thread on this forum doesn't make for good reading, it seems they are in financial poo these days firing staff right, left and centre then trying to rehire once they've realised their mistake!
