P&O cruises have indeed cut back a lot on regional airports this winter with nearly all flights now from LGW , MAN ,BHX and GLA
Cardiff like Bournemouth has seen a big cut to Barbados , BOH had up to 10 flights in the winter period but nothing this year
My friend who works for P&O said there was a problem this winter sourcing 767 aircraft from Thomson for the smaller regional airports and also the APD was a big issue hence they were concentrating this winter mainly on larger UK airports

The point here is that the airport will service many more people than the current combined 7m. With its excellent transport links, 'high speed' to London, etc and 24 hour operation, the catchment area will greatly expand, airlines will have greater access to it than the current restricted London airports.

bcnboy - London airports may be restricted, but transport even by high speed train from London to the Severn will take an absolute minimum of an hour, even if HS3 is built. Those with money who buy the expensive air tickets will prefer to fly from an airport near London, leaving just the cheap tickets being sold from Severn airport. The corollary to this, is that Severn International wouldn't really attract much in the way of premium airlines. The result would be the UK having paid tens of billions for an airport and a high speed rail line, but nowhere near enough passengers willing to pay to use it.
If the UK is going to spend serious cash to expand air infrastructure, the only place to do it is near London. There just isn't enough cold hard cash sloshing around anywhere else in the UK

I accept it's a spotters dream and it will never happen, but infrastructure planning is non-existent in the UK. The Government look at a problem do nothing, a capacity crisis occurs and then they set up an inquiry. The practical result is sticking plaster "improvements" which in reality is one more security booth and a WHSmith kiosk. A joint regional airport would attract more passengers from up the M5 and M4 and more inward business due to better road/rail links. I suspect if such an airport existed today it could well be handling up to 9 - 10 million pax. It would certainly have an Emirates flight! Neither Cardiff or Bristol are in good locations. I certainly wonder where Bristol will be in 20 years. The plan is for up to 10 million per year. Beyond that I can't see that there is any geographical room for expansion as the footprint of the airfield is so small......doubtless that will be the time for another capacity inquiry to dodge difficult decisions! I would be interested to know how the demographics have changed over the years. If Cardiff could sustain the Travel City Ops where did all those people go? Three times a week to Orlando is a lot of pax. According to most travel companies people are travelling more and more. Do they just go to Gatwick now? I have fond memories as a child watching the Wardair 747 at CWL.

Can't remember the exact year but think it was 2007-2008 when CWL had the following long Gail routes:
CWL-YYZ Zoom B767-300 split with LGW
CWL-YYZ Zoom B757-200
CWL-YVR Zoom B767-300 split with BFS
CWL-SFB Monarch A330
CWL-SFB Thomson B767-300
CWL-SFB Travel City B747-300
CWL-CUN Thomson B767-300
CWL-POP Thomson B767-300
These were always full, especially the jumbo so there is no way in the world that there is no market !!! Majority of the Zoom passengers were Welsh but there was also large amount from Bristol, Swindon & West Country.
CWL has always had links with Canada, lets hope they get YYZ back soon....

The people who used to fill those jumbos still would fill those jumbos. The problem isn't the demand it's the exponential rise in the cost of long haul holidays due to the fuel price and massive hike in apd both here and in the states. Couple that with complete withdrawal of easy credit which fuelled the boom and you have your answer. I was regularly traveling cwl sfb For less than 200 quid in the late 90s early 2000s. That wouldn't cover the apd now let alone the fare and fuel surcharge. Priced a family holiday to Florida and it was nearly £3000 before you even think of starting to pay £100 a head for all the parks. The long haul charters have just consolidated which means generally the big airports.

Well how's this for nostalgia ...
Back in circa 1980/1981, during the rugby charters, "our" DC10 blew a bogey of tyres taxying in at CWL and, from HQ in LGW, "we" chartered the Lease Air/Eastern Airways DC3 to transport the replacement wheels/tyres, jacks and engineers LGW/CWL/LGW ... a DC3 came to the rescue of a DC10!
Right, forget nostalgia and now back to reality ...

Thomson Long Haul from Bristol
Working at Bristol and knowing people, Talking to the engineers and some airport ops staff, it appears that the missing Long Haul next year is/was due to technical reasons with the dimentions of the Dreamliner, with the period of non operation for next year was to allow the airport to provide turning circles at the end of the runway to allow back tracking to exit via taxiways Charlie and delta (the original cross wind runways ) on to the ramp.
However, it appears that they are not now required as long as there are no vehicles using the grass/paved track on the inside of the boundry fence then the Dreamliner can operate and the Long Haul operation is back for 2015, or maybe sooner if they can sell the seats.
Anyway, we'll see.

I can remember Aer Lingus taking an A330 for a rugby charter in and out of BRS a few years, the pay load wasn't massive obviously but proof with a little work some bigger birds can get in there.
