£500 million proposed for a new rail service connecting Cardiff (and Wales for that matter) to Heathrow Airport........... WHY? Why not just get international flights from Cardiff Airport....... I know the rail service is not to do with Cardiff Airport, but couldn't the 500million just get invested into Cardiff Airport for Welsh Travelers, rather than a train to Heathrow

OK. Here's the problem. HOW do you invest the money? You can't give it to airlines, that's not legal, unless you cook up some more barking pseudo PSO routes. The terminal doesn't need money spent on it, it can easily handle the passengers it is likely to get. The road links and rail links to the airport are about as good as Bristol's.

Why not just get international flights from Cardiff Airport.......
Bring on the magic wand then.

I have argued repeatedly that the only sustainable way to build the airport is to prove to potential operators that a viable and profitable market exists. The fact that no-one seems willing to do this reminds me of Michelson–Morley in reverse - they went looking for something they thought was there, perhaps in CWL's case no-one is looking for something they think isn't....

If you are talking about the story published in a Sunday newspaper the government is supposedly looking to spend £500 million on rail development that would include a new station at Heathrow to bring together the Great Western main line, HS2 the high-speed line to Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, and Crossrail, the new west-east London line.

If it ever happens it would not just benefit (if that's the right word - some say the opposite) Cardiff and Wales but the whole of the south west portion of the British mainland via the GW main line.

I'm sure the citizens of Plymouth would echo your argument for their airport which may not exist at all very soon.

TwinAisle has already pointed out the difficulties of your suggestion so I won't bother going there.

If I could get on a high speed train to Heathrow from West of Cornwall I would be there and the same must go for anyone in South Wales so agree it would benefit the whole SW not just Wales - whether that will ever happen though.....

What what!!! HS2 joined up to Brunel's Billiard table connected into Heathrow. This sounds like intergrated transport thinking now connect HS1 as well.

Or is it Porcine Aviation.......................

TOM- Winter 11

TOM's winter timetable at CWL not too bad for its one based aircraft but surprised they dont add FUE. I understand that TCX are increasing FUE to 2x weekly this winter?
I for one take a winter hol in the canaries every winter and since discovering FUE last year - its my number one choice so its FUE again for me with TCX as TOM dont offer it. TOM offer a weekly to PFS - would have thought FUE more popular?

If TCX are operating two rotations a week, it may be that the market isn't large enough for a third, so TOM are going to do something else.

August figures are pretty bad which is becoming the norm. Down a total of 14.2% in PAX and 7.4% in ATMs. The rolling year is down by 11%. Some of the worst drops are Alicante, Jersey, Mahon, Newcastle & Murica all sustaining losses of over 30%. 4/5 of those routes were served by WW who have cut services this summer. Some medium drops are Edinburgh (which is still dropping which is a bit concerning considering BE are at 3 daily 3 days a week), Dublin and Amsterdam showing losses again.
Shall we have some positive news... Some nice climbers are Belfast (great news for BE), Anglesey, Las Palmas (been growing for the last few months), Ibiza (now at 5 weekly flights 3 TOM, 1 TCX, 1 WW) and Glasgow is eventually on positive!
The Madeira rotation by Atlantic Holidays had a LF of 94% which is really good news. A hopeful return for next year.
Now Helvetic. LFs down for the first time since the route started. An average of 22 PAX per flight. This needs to start growing if 2L are to return for the summer. I have been told most PAX are Swiss based so the welsh numbers need to increase.
On the whole a nasty month but it was expected as WW has a reduced schedule, TCX smaller aircraft and H4U and Goldtrail have both gone.

I think there is a slight error in your August total passenger numbers. Should it not be 152,039 down 14.2% on Aug 2010.

Any more news on apparent annoucement tomorrow? Is it coincidence that if it is true that it coincides with BE's Summer '12 release this week?

Or is it like every other rumoured CWL announcement and turn out to be a load of

Knowing CWL's luck, BE will be pulling out!

Only joking. Could be good sign of a possible base for 2012 then if on the same day. Suppose we will just have to wait and see.

Even if a base is announced we should wait to see what is going to happen with the possible Greek default as that will have major implications for us all with a possible return to reccession! Hopefully not though!

With the retirement of Terry Reilly from performing AME duties, it seems that there is only one AME renewing medicals in the bottom corner of Wales. Any idea why Cardiff airport have declined to offer a room at Cardiff for the medicals to be carried out? Surely there isn't a lack of empty rooms? I'd have thought it would be bending over backwards to attract customers.

Seems to me the airport is bending over backwards to deter new customers, whether they be passengers, airlines or any other service provider?

Maybe they don't want too many tenants for when the site gets sold as a new housing estate?

That hangar would also make a great IKEA. Mind you, St Athan would be in competition for that honour
