Surely that will depend on how well the new operator goes about re-building passenger numbers on the Air Links?

Green policies of the Welsh Government had pushed people to the rail service along with the fact that Highland Airways went into Administration causing a break in the service some years back also damaged the figures and profile of the route.

Totally agree, the loads were great when Highland operated the route but when they went into administration it knocked the confidence in the route. Whoever gets the contract can maximise the based aircraft too hopefully, why not add in a flight to somewhere like ORK, GCI, JER or BFS to maximise use of the aircraft, of course these wouldn't be subsidised but surely it is an option for someone like Links Air ?

The report on the Anglesey route mentioned a (historical) option around a Swansea extension to a route from Cardiff to North Wales. Has that option been completely killed off or is it under any form of credible consideration ?

Well SWS has a big enough runway for aircraft upto ATR 42 size as Air Wales used to operate from there. Some problem with the runway lighting upgrade but be great to see SWS included....your never know, will have to wait until the AM to see who has the contract and their plans

The criteria for the tender was very strict including latest/earliest the flight can depart/arrive on certain part of the sector.

Other restrictions included first 60% of the flights should not be sold for more than £60 with the remainder no more than £90 each way.

Also despite the opening times of RAF Valley it is only possible for this service to operate in blocks at start and end of these times as it would otherwise interfeer with RAF Training.

In my opinion the new operator will make use of their aircraft at Cardiff Airport which will be welcomed however uncertain which routes may work well.

Wouldn't additional flights from CWL in-between the CWL flights require an additional crew? I suppose the current set-up allows a single crew to operate a day's work.

I guess Valley being closed for a month might be part of the problem??
RAF Valley is to undertake a period of planned maintenance to the main runway, currently planned for early 2015. The project will take approximately one year and airfield operations will be limited to one runway. For a short period, likely to be around three to four weeks, the airfield will close completely.

Good news for Links Air, just seen on CWL website this comment........ "LinksAir will also connect the service with new commercial routes in spring 2015 and will deliver a new marketing campaign to increase passengers on this vital economic Wales air link", any ideas or suggestions ??

I would imagine that when the airfield is closed during these works the flights will operate to/from Hawarden as during previous short notice closures and ground transport to/from Anglesey Airport.

I guess even taking the hassle of driving to Cardiff airport, checking in and security etc then an hour to Hawarden plus 2 hours to Anglesey still beats 5 h 30 by train or 4h 30 by car. It will make things quite unprofitable for the airline though and I would expect the passenger number to be low that month.

The report mentioning works at RAF Valley taking place in early 2015, was published 10 months ago.
Are the works still planned for the same time period or is anyone personally familiar with the planned works able to comment ?

Just read that Germanwings won't be returning next year. Not sure what the loads were like on these flights but am not overly surprised at the decision given the low frequency. It's a shame a major carrier is leaving but Lufthansa are looking to cut costs across the board.

Yes but if you read the next update on BBC it has been updated there too. So maybe not all doom and gloom as being broadcast.

It's about time CWL had something to actually brag about, some good news please as it all seems pretty depressing at the moment !!

Give us some new routes and airlines to be proud if please

Re-naming Cardiff Airport

The re-branding of [Liverpool] John Lennon Airport increased traffic 10-fold. Even [Doncaster Sheffield] Robin Hood Airport did well.
Some people will grasp at any straw to support their case.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story...

LPL renamed in 2001 - pax 2.5M, current pax about 4M....

Looking at the numbers, you can put forward just as good an argument for the re-name slowing down growth (of course, largely irrelevant either way)
