There are lots of young people visit Belfast for its pub/club scene at no matter what time of the week phleas fogg you are on cloud9 there are more people visit Belfast/northern ireland than Cardiff or Wales anytime you have a very biased view towards where i live and don't give a toss what anybody on the mainland says about the place.

AIRPORT69,

It is fact that there are many a people that have a fear of travel to such destinations as Iraq and Afghanistan, going back a little further many people remain with a fear of N. Ireland.

Me, I pretty much don't care stuck out here in the jungle of a Pacific island, I traveled thru Aldergrove during the troubles but the majority of people didn't and, given the choice, wouldn't.

You sound like someone who has had a bad experience with where i live can't blame everyone for that but then we have 8 million pax using 3 airports so it must be doing something right how many pax use cardiff is it still in decline.

As Phileas say's...

Travelling on an Irish airline..... then spending all their holiday cash overseas. A lot more benefit to the economy bringing passengers to Wales to spend cash but I don't see too many of them on the horizon!

Good news for the airport though, even if FR would have fleeced most or all profit from the deal.

I remember a few months back someone commented "there's no way FR would return to CWL", think it was the same person with the negative comments about CWL.

Well they are back and let's hope they get the passengers and hopefully new routes to follow.

Well done CWL in getting FR in after all these years

From my "Inter European Airways" background CWL to the hotter winter climates such as Canaries will sell but it depends how many operators are offering it, if it's just one then "OK" although Ryanair operate somewhat of a large aeroplane for the CWL catchment area.

IEA got away with operating winter services to such destinations as Cyprus and Canaries so why not others get away with it also?

Great news for CWL, I think it will sell well and hazard a guess that more marginal FR routes will appear before the winter starts, this will be a dip your toe job, as already mentioned plenty of spare FR aircraft about over the winter so why not utilise them on some new routes and test the market, with the hoards of Welsh pax through BRS there is and always will be a market for these routes.
Also if pax are looking for less or more than 7 nights then it is not a major issue to book out of CWL in to BRS or vice versa especially with the Greyhound services to BRS from Cardiff.
How long before the DUB route returns? Not long I would guess

Not going to happen, the reason its taken so long for FR to come is because Cardiff want carriers like Aer Lingus and Vueling protected and services maintained so if FR want to operate to these places it will be full fees.

FR

I think this is the best news that has hit CWL in a long time, and I trust that a relationship can be built between Ryanair, CWL and the flying Welsh public...forget not, a lot of Welsh people already fly FR from BRS so aren't scared of the loco product FR offer because they are already savvy.

I trust this route will be a success and FR can build a portfolio at CWL again - not forgetting great work by the CWL team to entice FR back after such a gap!

When you say 'protect' carriers like EI & VY, let's take a moment to ask where their winter schedules are because there's no sign yet...!? Just saying.

I wish CWL well with this route and it should do ok, but let's not kid ourselves that this is the start of a partnership between FR CWL airport & the public, partnership means mutual respect, treating the other partner fairly & trust, I will leave it to others as to whether the word partnership is appropriate

I think it's unrealistic in the longer term to think Ryanair is only going to operate one flight a week to Tenerife, so there's bound to be more routes to follow. Maybe not at first during the winter season but by Summer 2015 I would expect some additions.

Obvious routes to me would be the usual bucket and spade routes such as places like Alicante, Faro, Lanzarote, Malaga, Palma etc. especially if they operate without a base in Cardiff, but then there's an overlap with Vueling on some of those.

FR won't build a portfolio of routes, BRS will be number one and profitability from their won't be allowed slip to expand at Cardiff.

As for winter schedules, how about take a minute to see where the Walsh public are during winter

If they didn't support ALC/AGP last winter then why would it operate again or another carrier take it up.

Would be very stupid to management to throw away the work they did over the last few years and put all eggs in one basket.

I think the phrase I used was "...I trust that a relationship can be built..." and didn't suggest for one minute that a "partnership" was instantly made as a result of this announcement - as you, I and everyone else knows, FR doesn't just 'get into bed' with any airport, they need a lot of enticing, sadly.

Well I agree with some of the comments made, it's great to see that CWL have got FR back after 8 years so big thumbs up 👍👍, and I'm sure there will be some more routes before long......ACE, LPA be good as the Canaries have always been popular ex CWL and will compliment TFS

Fanrailuk,

I personally believe that CityJet stepping in on Edinburgh, Glasgow & Paris after the shocking announcement that Flybe were to withdraw from the services is one of the best news that has hit CWL. Having 3 x aircraft based at Cardiff with the scheduling requiring mostly 2 with a third being used on certain days has secured jobs.

On the other hand having a very well known low-cost airline in the likes of Ryanair showing an interest for one reason or another may just make other airlines willing to consider Cardiff in the future.

I don't expect a major offering from Ryanair but it will be interesting to see if CWL remains a TFS only service or not.

On another note the Aer Lingus winter 14/15 schedule has been released however due to the fanfair of Ryanair announcement it has been missed by many.

Nothing exciting in reality in exception to the Six Nations where for the first time Aer Lingus have provided a 1st version of the schedule with an A320 on several flights.

FRI 13MAR EI3294 Dublin 12:50 to Cardiff 13:50 A320 (Aer Lingus)
FRI 13MAR EI3295 Cardiff 14:30 to Dublin 15:30 A320 (Aer Lingus)
FRI 13MAR EI3296 Dublin 16:10 to Cardiff 17:10 A320 (Aer Lingus)
FRI 13MAR EI3297 Cardiff 17:50 to Dublin 18:50 A320 (Aer Lingus)
SAT 14MAR EI3290 Dublin 09:00 to Cardiff 10:00 A320 (Aer Lingus)
SAT 14MAR EI3291 Cardiff 10:40 to Dublin 11:40 A320 (Aer Lingus)
SUN 15MAR EI3290 Dublin 10:50 to Cardiff 11:50 A320 (Aer Lingus)
SUN 15MAR EI3291 Cardiff 12:30 to Dublin 13:30 A320 (Aer Lingus)
SUN 15MAR EI3296 Dublin 12:50 to Cardiff 13:50 A320 (Aer Lingus)

I'm as surprised as the rest with the reappearance of Ryanair. It will be a good thing for Welsh passengers as competition has a downward influence on price.
But, there is always a but, lets not confuse popularity of a route with profitability of a route. Ryanair will pull the plug the moment they sense red ink. The main reason TCX withdrew from CWL was the inability to turn a profit during the Winter months on a programme (in the later years) built around the Canaries and Cyprus. Use it or lose it, as the post above said.
