Could just be a very expensive housing estate. I just hope CJ has worked out what the legal cost will be to pay BAMC when he closes the airport......

Not sure he can count that high....
If it does become a housing estate, BA may want a long straight road through the middle, with these cool recessed street lights....

Interesting analysis of 2nd tier airports, inc CWL, here.
Airport privatisation: The ‘R’ word (renationalisation) hangs over the world’s privatised airports | CAPA - Centre for Aviation
I hope the occupants of the People Republic of South Wales can come up with 1, the money and 2. the ideas to turn things round, as the housing estate idea is getting more attractive by the day.

Just went through CWL airport. Very nice people working there, waiting for something to happen. Airport empty, old, I felt I was back 40 years. Bad first impression for foreigner arriving in a capital city. It has lost 1/2 its traffic in 5 or 6 years. It reminded me of Teeside.

BA
The engineering is a limited company owned by BA. So long as they get adequate compensation there are other airports that would be only to happy to have a large resident engineering company.
I doubt that BA have any loyalty to Wales. It is a business!

I wouldn't say as much as they have a loyalty to Wales however they have invested majorly in South Wales.
Not only do you have BAMC but also the are units at LLantrisant & Blackwood plus a decent supply chain in the smaller South Wales component & aerospace companies.
According to the Cardiff Airport Consultative Committee Meeting before last in Oct 2012 there were discussions of the British Airways shorthaul maintenance moving to South Wales from Glasgow. Now no location was provided however my guess would have been at St Athan.
Utilising the Enterprise Zones It could be possible of further BA investment in South Wales securing jobs and also increasing th number of jobs.

Urgh not another ! Manx2 can operate the route already with the CWL based aircraft, of which the current subsidy is far too high. Instead Manx2 can keep their £800,000 per annum, but operate both VLY and CEG in a better deal for the taxpayer ! No more public money !

More "hearsay" from the Reggie Spotters of Wales:
Well the plans clearly aren't viable and sustainable if they require an annual subsidy of similar to £800,000.00 ... What part of viable and sustainable don't they understand in Wales?
And Hawarden is otherwise known as "Chester Airport" ... Isn't Chester in England?
We need a business plan to show that the plans are viable and sustainable
The present north-south route links Cardiff with Valley on Anglesey.
The service receives an annual subsidy of £800,000 from the Welsh government.
Chester-Hawarden Airport’s managing director, Caroline Craft, confirmed she would consider asking for a similar deal

I went back three pages but saw no reference to this:

Hawarden is 40 minutes drive across the border to Manchester Airport or about the same to Liverpool Airport. Are border formalities really so time-consuming that the northeast Wales catchment needs another airport for higher-seat-cost regional-aircraft services "to Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Man and Cardiff" rather than using these airports (or indeed the train to Cardiff)? I note that a couple of the AMs quoted in that article are more in favour of improving North/South rail links rather than subsidising air services, and for the distance in question, that seems entirely reasonable.

The SSK
This was first highlighted in this forum on 9 October last year at #667.
It's a summer Saturday route from Dusseldorf aimed primarily at German tourists similar to the services to Newquay and Inverness that have been operating in recent summers.

The route has been costing us more than we initially thought and has been rising. I was initially under the impression that is was a £1.3m per year subsidy.
2007/2008 - £1.187m
2008/2009 - £1.079m
2009/2010 - £1.080m
2010/2011 - £1.125m
2011/2012 - £1.479m
The airport was build for the sum of £1m and has an annual subsidy of £800,000.
There is a forecast that this sum is due to rise to approx £1.6m for 2012/2013 and this is for the combined cost of subsidy to Citywing and airport terminal.
The Welsh Government is also funding the Gerallt Gymro service that operates North/South twice a day which competes directly with the current Cardiff - Anglesey service.
Flights for the Cardiff to Anglesey are between £19.95 to £59.95 so I cannot see why the Hawarden service would be any different. Even though I would love to see the Hawarden service as an additional route from Cardiff I don't think a subsidy would be justified and the money could be spent elsewhere when the Welsh Government purchases the airport.

It's a tour around Wales, that also takes in some of England.
Have you ever been to the Gower, Pembrokeshire, Brecon, Snowdon? I'd recommend it. Some beautiful places that can only be matched by few other places in the UK.

Llantwit Major is worth visiting for a couple of hours at least - if only to see the double church used as a centre of learning before universities existed.
Quite easy to spend a couple of cultural days in Glasgow - visit Hunterian museum, Kelvingrove or Mackintosh designed School of Art or perhaps the Burrell collection in Pollock Park - I enjoyed Glasgow immensely. The Germans who visit the UK tend to be quite interested in culture even if some Brits are not !

You make a valid point, us brits seem to have discarded culture and history in our majority. Whereas, Germans, Swiss and Austrians still have a fond tendency to enjoy cultural learnings, hence the reasons of the DUS and Prima Reisen flights this year !
