Does anyone know when the new terminal is expected to open and what plans there are for the existing terminal? (There's nothing on the AENA website.)

That website just states that the terminal will be completed in 2009. I think that's a tad hopeful judging by current progress. I flew into the airport in mid May this year and there was still a fair number of the domed steel roof pods still sitting on the apron. I think it's more realistic to suggest that the terminal should be open to commercial flights in Spring 2010, in time for the busy Summer season.
I can't help with how they propose to split up airline operations between the terminals I'm afraid.

Greeting ppruners.
Does anyone have information regarding any plans for expansion for flights to/ from LGW for the coming winter season. BA are dropping the route for the forseeable future and as a commuter, do EZY, ZB or even FR have plans to increase capacity (yes winter season I know!!)?

June 2010 is the current "target date"....
Airline splits between terminals haven't been announced but you can imagine scheduled services from Legacy carriers in the new terminal along with those airlines willing to pay a bit extra... The rest will probably stay where they are ie: Ryanair and the cost concious charters.

Opening dates.
Not read much about opening dates beyond the offical "Early 2011". It looked pretty complete now when I flew in last week.
With passenger traffic falling significantly since the start of work - there probably wont be any need to keep the current T2 operational after it does open

The current terminals will be closed.
During last weeks there were functional tests for the new terminal (SATE, lights, doors...). Tomorrow will start the basic tests for employees until 20th January to check the facilities. Between February and March there will be tests with extras (about 2.500 people in different sessions). And finally, I think the new building may start with the new summer season. Anyway, before the regional elections (late May).

T1 and T2 will remain closed when all companies have moved into the New Area Terminal (NAT). Then, they will put a metal or wood plates on the landside and plastic on the airside to cover existing facilities (according to last comments).
Due to the bad economic situation, the future capacity of the building and the intention of making profitable the new facilities, I think that we won't see the current terminals during a long period.

Many thanks for the photos! (I haven't looked at the videos yet). I must say that it looks nicer inside than I feared; approaching the airport by road from the city, the new terminal looks absolutely hideous, in my view.
Although I'm looking forward to using the NTA, part of me would like to see T2 retained. For a swift/short journey from aircraft to customs exit, it is so much better than T1 and there're nice pieces of grass in front to catch the last warm rays before flying north into winter!

In my opinion, the external design is more aesthetic than the new terminal at Malaga. The roof of Malaga seems an egg carton in down position. Instead the jet bridges at Alicante break the harmony (glass would be better).

The NTA incorporates some advantages, such as the ability to check the luggage over two hours in advance and not have to worry about your belongings during the day of departure (ideal for charter airlines). So you can spend your time like you want without the need to be 2 hours before your flight to check in your luggage (only 40 min for example to pass the control).

Do you have any pictures of the new train station? (I know it'll be years before trains run to this airport, as the last section from Mercado to Los Luceros took ages and the San Vicente line isn't finished, but I'm curious!)

- Jet2: East Midlands, Glasgow, Newcastle
- Norwegian Air Shuttle: Helsinki
- Ryanair: Kaunas, Magdeburg/Cochstedt, Tampere
- Viking Airlines: London Gatwick (peak season)
- Vueling Airlines: Amsterdam
- Wizz Air: Bucharest-Baneasa
Then, Avianca has requested to Aeronáutica Civil from Colombia, to operate Bogotá-Alicante-Barcelona (4x/week), but the company has not commented yet.
And finally, additional frequencies/capacity like Ryanair to Bratislava, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow-Prestwick and Liverpool; Vueling to Paris CDG; Jet2 to Glasgow (capacity) or S7 Airlines to Moscow-Domodedovo (capacity and frequencies).
Instead, there are reductions (for example Ryanair to Billund, Bremen, Charleroi, Memmingen or Niederrhein) or cancellatations (for example City Airline to Gothenburg-Landvetter or Ryanair to Aarhus, Altenburg, Derry, Lübeck or Norrköping).
